The Argonne News, January 15, 1996 Spencer honored by nuclear society Bruce W. Spencer (RE) has been elected a fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) for his contributions to understanding safety issues in virtually every reactor type through innovative analytical and experimental programs, and for his contributions to international programs furthering reactor safety. Spencer received the Argonne Director’s Award in 1988 for his contributions to the U.S. team analyzing the Chernobyl-4 accident. He won the University of Chicago/Argonne National Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award in 1994, the highest honor the university gives to Argonne employees. The award recognizes the achievements or leadership of scientific and technical staff. He is a member of the reactor safety and thermal hydraulics divisions of the ANS and has written more than 160 technical publications. The American Nuclear Society is a technical society comprising engineers and scientists devoted to advancing nuclear technology. The Argonne News, April 2, 2001 Bruce Spencer, a Senior Nuclear Engineer Program Manager with 29 years of service in the Reactor Engineering Division died March 1. His wife, Carol, and children survive him. The Argonne News, November 18, 2002 Endowment honors reactor safety expert Colleagues and friends of the late Bruce Spencer have created the Bruce Spencer Endowment Fund in Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This endowment fund has been created in tribute to Spencer's many significant accomplishments in reactor safety and as a lasting recognition of his involvement with his alma mater. This endowment fund will be used to support outstanding students in nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering at the university through scholarships and awards for both undergraduate and graduate students. Spencer received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While he was a student, he was active with the American Nuclear Society, Pi Tau Sigma, Sigma Tau and Tau Beta Pi. He was also a research assistant professor in the heat transfer and fluid flow laboratory before joining Argonne for an illustrious 30-year career. He also served as a founding member of the Department of Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering Alumni and Industry Advisory Board.
