Al was a good friend -- a fellow Beaubien and Schurz compatriot, my undergraduate college roommate, groomsman at my wedding, and all-round bright, caring, strong-principled, Christian man taken from us far too soon. I, as with his family and many friends, miss him immensely.   Dennis Mergen

Al and I were good friends during our time at Schurz.  We continued our friendship while in college and beyond.

While we were in college I fondly remember his taking the train to San Francisco to visit during a school break.  He brought along a cat that he had to work on (dissect?) for a biology class.  He didn't get time to work on it during our time together so he booked a roomette on the return trip for the project.  I never did hear if he got it done!

While Al was in the Navy he and Betty were stationed for a while at Hunter's Point near San Francisco.  We got together frequently.  I recall one weekend when we took their adopted blind son, Jean, to the Renaissance Pleasure Fair in Marin County.  It was a heartwarming experience to see Al & Betty helping that young man "see" the fair through sound and touch.

I still think of him often.  He is deeply missed.
