John G. Ersfeld, Jr.

 John "Jack" Ersfeld of Antioch John "Jack" Ersfeld, 68, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at his home after a tough battle with lung and brain cancer. He was born April 28, 1943, in Chicago, the son of the late Dr. John "Jack" and Genevieve (nee Moebius) Ersfeld. Jack proudly served in the Army 1st Air Calvary in Vietnam. Before his retirement in 1994, he had worked for over 21 years as a patrolman for the Skokie Police Department. More recently, Jack was a bus driver for the Millburn School District (he loved the kids). Jack's first love was golf, he was also a beloved Chicago Bears fan who was at the '85 Super Bowl to watch his team to victory, and he enjoyed boating. He was a great father to all his four-legged babies, and had a great sense of humor, giving nicknames to his family and close friends, like "Elmo." On March 1, 1990, he married Diane Gray (nee Bolka) in Las Vegas, Nev. Survivors include: his wife and best friend Diane; his stepchildren, Jim "Rambo" Gray and Courtney "Bone" Gray, both of Antioch; a grandson Dylan "D" Gray; two brothers, Paul Ersfeld and Keith "Katesmith" (Rebecca) Ersfeld; and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura "Pump" Ersfeld. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, 1055 Main St. (Route 83), Antioch. Interment with military honors will follow in Millburn Cemetery, Old Mill Creek, Ill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers; donations to Adopt-A-Pet, a local animal shelter, or Police K9 unit for training or life vests, are appreciated in his memory. Message from Bill Barta:  My good friend and our classmate , John Ersfeld, passed away recently. Funeral services will be at 10:30 at the Strang Funeral Home 1055 Main Street, Antioch, Illinois. He will be interred at Millburn Cemetery, Old Mill Creek, Illinois. His obiturary is in the Chicago Tribune today, September 29th.

John was an Army combat veteran of the Vietnam war and a retired Skokie policeman. He was my best man at our wedding, 44 years ago.
