David R. Evans

    David R. Evans, 22-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert R. Evans, 116 Federal Reservation, burned to death Wednesday morning in a fire near the campus of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

    Mr. Evans is associate warden at the Federal Reformatory here [Chillicothe].

    David, a sophomore majoring in commerce, reportedly had been up most of the night studying for a test.  His roommate told authorities he left their four room, two-story apartment at about 3:30 a.m..  Evans was studying at the time.

    The roommate said he returned to the apartment building at 6 a.m. to find it in flames.  Evans was trapped inside, and his body, burned beyond recognition, was found on the floor.

    The apartment, about three blocks from the university's main campus, was near the football stadium.

    Young Evans was a 1959 graduate of Chillicothe High School and had served a stint in the Navy.

    The body was taken to the Jones Funeral Home, Washington, Iowa where service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
