Shirley A. Leatherwood Hayes, 75, of Hickory, NC, died 4:53 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Catawba Regional Hospice House, Newton, NC.

She was born December 31, 1940, in Chillicothe to the late Louis A. and Betty F. Leatherwood.

Surviving are husband, Donald F. Hayes, of Conover, NC; children, Theresa Kitchen (Ted) Biggerstaff, Newton, NC, Theodore (Peggy) Kitchen Jr., Jacksonville, FL, Constance B. Garrett, Conover, NC, Alexander H. (Andrea) Hayes, Frederick, MD, and Eric D. (Bridget) Hayes, Woodridge, NJ; brothers, Jeffrey S. (Alice) Leatherwood, Cincinnati, OH, Kriss M. (Gladys) Leatherwood, Fayetteville, OH, Skipper Lee (Lisa) Leatherwood, Chillicothe; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Kitchen Griffith; brother, Kevin L. Leatherwood; maternal grandparents, William and Rhoda Thomas; paternal grandparents, Samuel and Artie Belle Leatherwood.

Shirley had been a homemaker most of her life and was active in Little League and Cub Scouts for over six years, and was an avid bowler, even after the amputation of her right leg.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Jack Norman officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the WARE FUNERAL HOME.
