William F. “Pat” Simpson

Aug. 26, 1944 - May 26, 2017

NOTRE DAME - William F. “Pat” Simpson, age 72, of Pinehurst, NC, passed away Friday, May 26, 2017. Funeral Mass will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 31, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Southern Pines, NC. Family will receive friends following the service at a reception at CCNC from 3:30-5:00. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cheryl Archer Simpson; son, Scott Simpson (wife, Vicki) of Ada, Oklahoma; son, Matt Simpson of South Bend, Indiana; daughter, Megan Fereday (husband, Chris) of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and seven grandchildren, Paige, Skylar, Whitni, Grant, Brady, Molly, and Thomas; and many extended family members. Pat was born August 26, 1944, in Gadsden, Alabama, to the late Josephine Fullington and William R. Simpson. Pat met Cheryl in high school in Chillicothe, Ohio. After he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966, they moved to Akron, Ohio, and started their family. Pat's children, Scott, Matt, and Megan, were all born in Akron. Pat's career included investment management and manufacturing, and the family eventually settled in Ada, Oklahoma. Pat became President and Owner of JP Emco, which manufactured injection-molded automotive parts supplied to Ford and GM, selling the plant in 1997. Pat and Cheryl then retired and moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 1999. Pat will be remembered as a very loving, caring, honest, and generous husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As a passionate Notre Dame alumnus who spent time on the Fighting Irish football squad, he spent many Falls back in South Bend, cheering on (and occasionally critiquing) his beloved Irish. Pat and Cheryl set up a scholarship that helps several undergraduates attend Notre Dame every year. He also served on the Library Advisory Council at the University. In his retirement years, Pat played golf almost daily with Cheryl and his many friends at the Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC). His regular playing partners included lifelong friend Bill Seidensticker, among many others. After his family, Notre Dame and golf were Pat's great passions. He doted on all of his grandchildren with tremendous pride. His family will carry on his spirit of warmth, welcoming, and generosity. The Simpsons are very grateful for the many loving and supporting friends and extended family members. Please consider making a contribution to your charity of preference remembering Pat. Online condolences may be left at www.bolesfuneralhome.com. Boles Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. in Southern Pines will be assisting the family.

To Pat's family and to Cheryl and Bill especially, my thoughts are with you all. I have always remembered Pat was a smiling, competitive, rock of a guy, and it sounds like he remained that way to the end. I'm sorry to hear he is gone but know he will be fondly remembered. Rod

I was saddened to learn of Pat's passing and my thoughts and prayers go out to Cheryl and their family members.

I have alot of very fond memories of the times we had together and the adventures, both in Chillicothe and in northern Minnesota at his relatives' cabin.

Rest in peace my friend.

Pat and I grew up together, attended Notre Dame, were in each other's weddings, and eventually both retired to Pinehurst N.C.. My wife,Gail, and I spent time with Pat and Cheryl several times a week and took many trips together. Fortunately, Cheryl has had very good support from her children as well as the local golfing ladies and her bridge buddies and so is doing as well as can be expected

Pat and I and our families moved to Chillicothe at the same time, summer of '54.  Our families rented a house next to the old Clark Milling Company.  The Simpsons lived upstairs and the Ziglers lived downstairs.  I remember Pat an I doing things that would now horrify us if our grandkids did it - like playing mumblety-peg with real knives when we were 9.  Pat and I guarded lives at the country club pool for several years.  Pat was the boss, and I his not so respectful underling.  Later when Pat was getting a start with Goodyear, he and Cheryl rented my grandmother's house in Akron.  And so our lives interwtined, and now, in retrospect, they should have intertwined more in our later years.  That's a lesson for all of us.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you Cheryl.  Rest in peace Pat.

I was very sorry to learn of Pat's passing, but know he has gone to a better place. After reading the 3 other comments left before mine, I was happy to learn that he had had contact with each of them after leaving Chillicothe, and it's especially nice that he and Bill Seidensticker had remained close friends in later life. I appreciated Bill's comments about Pat and especially his reassurance of the support that Cheryl has received from their children and the women's groups she belonged to. I extend my sincere sympathy and good wishes to each family member as well as the many friends he had during his life.

Unfortunately, I hadn't seen Pat since graduation, but I definitely recall him  from the time he moved to Chillicothe. With his tall stature and nice looks, plus his affable, easy-going personality, he seemed to qiuickly fit right in and become a well-thought-off member of our CHS class. As a bright student, I always pictured him going on to maybe be a lawyer, since he seemed to have a disposition and manner that suited that profession, but going to Notre Dame took him in different directions, and it sounds as if he succeeded in his chosen career path as well as his family life. A 51-year marriage is quite an accomplishment in itself! .It pleases me greatly that he had such a positive life after high school, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to know him. May God bless him and all those who mourn his death.

Thoughts of Pat, Cheryl and all of you, his family and friends, have been almost constant in this time since his passing. His smile, incredible sense of humor and kindness were so him when I knew him in high school. In reading the comments from those who had the honor of remaining close to him and his family over the years, it is clear that the warmth and enthusiasm that was who he was did not change. A dear man is lost for now, but thankfully, his love, peace and spirit remain in those whose lives he touched.
