In Memory

Eric Oiler

not sure how many of us will remember him as he had died 25 years ago. eric oiler born 1970, died of a tragic car accident in 1982. at 11 years old he was sleeping in the rear of his parents station wagon, returning from circleville, when the accident occured. i dont remember the specifics, whether or not there was another car involved. but eric, fast asleep, thank god, was thrown from the rear of the car as it over turned and he was killed instantly. i personally remember eric playing scioto valley youth league football. i want to say he played for the steelers, but the dolphins stands out to me also. nevertheless one of my memories is of him laying in the coffin with that superbowl ring on a chain around his neck. his fingers had swollen too much to put it back on his hand. eric was a real stand up dude, he never caused any trouble and was always quick to help a buddy out.
were still thinkin bout ya dude!!!!

I used to walk to school with Eric every day after I had to transfer to Central Elementary. His loss was devasting in the 6th grade. I can truly say that back then he was very "cool" as we all wanted to be cool. I know he is in a much better place, but he has truly been missed along this journey.

One of my funniest memories was in 5th grade when we wanted to try and smoke something. So we hid in the bushes (outside the school like some dummies) and rolled some leaves in notebook paper and tried to smoke it!! Of course that lasted about 1/2 a second.

I remember sitting in class when the 'morning announcements' were being read. The news of Eric's death echoed over the loudspeaker and the entire school was asked to honor him with a moment of silence. Gone but not forgotten...

My memories of eric was also from flag football, baseball and playing hand ball at polland park, we made up a league with everyone that lived in the area, and played. Central school is where I first met him in first grade, we live a couple blocks from each other and alway walk up the alley to meet each other, even when going to smith school we meet at Carls town house every morning, and I also remember the day or night when it happened, my mom got several calls on the phone, but wouldn't say what happened, eric was still alive and on the way to the hospitol where he later past from bleeding inside, my mom told me afterwards as well as his mother and father. I had went to school that next day not knowing anything yet, and everyone ask me did I hear what happen to eric, I said what of course, they spoke of his death and I reponed that was a lye because he was on the bus with me, we sat togther everday before school, and that day was real as today, and Mr Anderson had come got me and ask If I was alright, why I said?, he then told the home room class the event, It hurt me alot, at that age. later I became very good friends with his sister and she gave me the details alot better, and she even spoke of a very godly moment that she awoke one night weeks later and there eric was telling her it was Okay not to hurt anymore he was fine, it was a soft moment for me as she told me this, I have had alot of friends pass but only 2 hurt me where pain is what I felt and they was both classmates ERIC OILER AND JASON BROWN I will always love them. those are my memories carl.therockharris

I to remember Eric fondly. He was such a nice guy. We lived near each other and he was always so sweet. His death hit me hard and I remember thinking that god was so cruel for taking such a wonderful guy. I now know that god just needed a special angle to sit at his side. I have thought of him many times over the years. Whenever I buckle one of my children into the carseat and and its giving me trouble and I have the thought of how much easier it would be to just skip it I always think of the terrible accident and how lucky I am to have those troublesome carseats to keep my little ones safe. Our parents just didn't know.

Eric was always close to me in class as our last names put us there. He was the first kid that I knew that had changeover glasses. As soon as the sun shown, he became Mr Foster Grant. And that little giggle he had!

As I recall, he broke his leg in the accident, but it was a ruptured pelvis that killed him. Mr. Zurich told my class to not let him die for no reason - so wear your seat belt. I have ever since that day and it has saved me. Lessoned learned!

Eric was so nice, i remember he lived on 5th street. I don't think i ever forgot about him. Maybe, i had a little crush him. But i will always remember him being a patrol person, with his orange sash aroung his torso. And of course the glasses.

I remember Eric as a very quiet, shy person. I will never forget his sweet smile. He didn/t live far from my grandparents so I saw him often. I can still remember when I went to the funeral home to pay my last respects- I was only 11yrs. old and it was a horrible feeling to see a friend who was so young laying in that casket. I still remember how swollen his hands were. I have thought of him many times over the years. He is still sadly missed and may he continue to rest in peace.
