Walnut Hills High School
Class Of 1960

Reunion 2022

September 30 - October 2, 2022

The Class of 1960 60th + 2 Reunion, The Class of ‘60 Turns 80

The Class of 1960 celebrated its 60th Reunion, delayed due to the pandemic, but that only added to the joy of being together again.

We began the weekend at Skyline Chili on 4th and Sycamore in downtown Cincinnati on Friday at 5:00 PM.  We delighted in chatting and catching up while having wine or beer or other beverages, and then savoring the unique Skyline Chili (it even has chocolate in it!) with oyster crackers, salads, coneys and capping all that off with Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip or Vanilla Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.  Our servers were so nice and experienced, and the Manager, Pat, was excellent.  We had blue and gold WHHS flags in jars filled with peanuts and tied with blue and gold ribbons on each table.  We played 50’s songs, and classmates viewed the list of our classmates we have lost displayed on a board on an easel.

We ended the Meet and Greet at around 7:00 PM in order to get to WHHS for the 7:30 125th + 2 Anniversary Celebration Concert featuring the Walnut Hills High School Alumni Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Vocal Ensemble, all of whom were outstanding.  Typical Walnut quality.  A nice reception with lots of goodies took place after the concert.

Saturday morning and early afternoon there were many activities at the school.  Scenes from Macbeth. still in rehearsal, were presented at the Black Box Theater adjacent to the Auditorium. There were tours of the campus and building, lectures on China and art, demonstrations by the multi-award winning Robotics Team in the cafeteria (no, the forks are no longer  threatening from above because the ceiling has been replaced) which has worked with Proctor and Gamble on a yet undisclosed new product.  The Spirit Shop there was filled with irresistible logo shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, magnets, and more. Sandwiches or salads were available for purchase for lunch.

Walking down the up staircase at 80 to get there is the challenge it wasn’t as Effies and E-Flats aged 12 or 13.  Spread around campus were rehearsals of the marching band, the steel drum practice, natatorium demonstrations (the only natatorium at a public high school in Cincinnati), and much more.  Everything ended at 2:00 PM to allow time to get to the 125th + 2 Anniversary Gala later.

Music Hall was awash with alumni spanning the decades.  There were even some suspicious attendees walking around dressed in togas.  Where was the discus thrower???  After the cocktail hour, we headed upstairs to the Grand Ballroom to find our tables for dinner.  Entering the Grand Ballroom we had a fabulous view of the blue and gold lighting, the gold-domed ceiling making us think of The Library Dome at Walnut, and 3 screens surrounding a stage facing the room of tables and beautiful place settings. Each table had a centerpiece which was cake for dessert.  Some of the cakes were sculpted to look like the front of WHHS with the Dome and various other architectural aspects of the school.

Dinner was divine: a unique salad, beef and chicken with a skewer of vegetables, a potato patty, all prepared with excellence. That cake centerpiece was delicious as well, and might have had a hint of licorice in it.  The dinner was accompanied by WHHS students and faculty performing all evening: violin, cello, singing, poetry and was capped off by surprising Deb Heldman, Director of the Alumni Office, with induction into the WHHS Alumni Foundation Award Electees.  We ended by hearing the Choir perform a beautiful rendition of “High On The Hill” and then we all stood to sing the Alma Mater a second time with them.  It was a moving ending to a delightful and unique event.

Sunday morning we were at Losantiville Country Club for a delicious brunch. We delighted in reminiscing and sharing upcoming plans and activities.

Those attending differing events during the reunion weekend were Sue Adler Zulanch, Anne Blohm Golden, Evie Brod, Dan and Susan Earley, Betty Elsey, Cathy Hover Lippert and husband, Mitch, Ellen Katz Greenberger and husband Mark, Ronnie Levinson Shore, Bob Levy and wife Margaret Ma, Rich Lisner, Jon and Barbara McIntyre, Elisabeth Meier Tetlow, Bill Moore, Jack and Mary Bob Rubenstein, Renee Schwartz Frankel and husband Rusty, Don Spencer, Joyce Sprosty Fleming, Ed Steubing and wife Carla Janson, and Bill and Nina Strauss.

We were deeply saddened with the passing of our dear Classmate and Reunion Chair, Robert S Brown, but carried on the planning with the work of a dedicated committee:  Evie Brod, Betty Elsey, Cathy Hover Lippert, Ellen Katz Greenberger, Rich Lisner, Joyce Sprosty Fleming, Jack Rubenstein, John Levy, and the support of the WHHS Alumni Office, Director Deb Heldman and her Staff. Bob Brown sponsored our Class for the Friday Meet and Greet and the Sunday Brunch, so he  really was with us after all!

Looking forward to seeing you at our future gatherings.

Evie Brod
