John Weitzel and I carried on an intermittent correspondence. He attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music after Walnut Hills, and later was teaching Chemistry. In January, 1986 he wrote that he had gone back to school full-time in 1980 and earned his Ph.D. and was now in his second year as a Professor. He was living in Columbia, South Carolina.
Years later, a letter I sent him was not answered for a long time, and then I got a letter from his Department Chairman saying that John had passed away and my letter had eventually found it's way to the Department office. He said John was an excellent teacher, and then began behaving erratically missing classes and blowing it off when asked about it. That kind of erratic behavior was nothing like John's record of devoted concern for his students and work. No one could understand what was going on, and then he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died soon thereafter. I don't recall the year. If I find that letter, I will update this with the date.
