Jim and I went to the visitation for Barb in Rising Sun, Indiana.  It was our pleasure to visit with her husband Phil and her extended family as they shared their loss.    She was a wonderful person who struggled with cancer for along time.

Lamenting today the death of a friend and fellow cancerian, Barbara Lauterbach Ruxton.

Barb, like so many strong women, was a fighter, a serial cancer survivor: three times lung cancer and then, in 2008, breast cancer. On Friday, Nov 25, it all caught up with her as she lay, mortally ill, in hospice.

I had known Barb in high school, but it wasn’t until my own diagnosis with cancer that I really knew her. Not something clingy, not daily dispatches. Just the kind of thing that people with cancer learn to do so well and appreciate so much: a periodic ‘bed check’ of how you’re doing and wishing you well. When I disclosed my own cancer diagnosis, Barb was one of the very first to respond and to share her own cancer journey with me.

She gave me the gift of hope.
