Gwen K. Glazer

JANUARY 15, 1951 – JANUARY 24, 2024

IN THE CARE OF

Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel

Gwen Karen Glazer of Orange Village, Ohio, passed away on January 24, 2024 at the age of 73.

Gwen was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 15, 1951. She was the third of seven children — enough, as she put it, to field a kickball team against the neighbors.

She graduated from Cleveland Heights High School before attending the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a degree in English Literature. Upon graduation, she returned to Cleveland, where she taught English for several years. However, when one of her younger brothers was diagnosed with diabetes, she decided to pivot to medicine, taking pre-med night school classes after work. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University’s medical school.

It was only natural that Gwen, given her passion and knack for working with children, would specialize in pediatrics. She believed strongly in providing quality healthcare to underserved patients, and served as a pediatrician within the Cleveland MetroHealth system for 30 years. She spent the bulk of her career at the Clement Center and Buckeye Health Center.

Gwen married in 1984, going on to have three children. As a mother, she was unfailingly kind and attentive.

On her days off work, you would most likely find Gwen out on a long walk with one of her children, sisters, or dear friends. If not on a walk, she was likely reading a book or practicing Tai Chi, a passion she picked up in her 50s.

She was defined by constant curiosity and unwavering kindness. She had a laugh that filled the whole house.

Gwen was the beloved daughter of the late Norman and Miriam Glazer, loving mother of Isaac Hagerling, Clara Hagerling (Ari Auerbach), and Heather Hagerling (Tze Ern Teo), cherished sister of Gale Glazer (the late Louis Font), the late Gary Glazer (Diane), Greer Glazer (Kerry Volsky), Ginger Glazer (Ken Lawler), Geoffrey Glazer (Naomi), and Greg Glazer, caring wife of Carl Hagerling, and eager grandmother of Netanel Auerbach.

Services will be held at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Rd. in Cleveland Heights, Friday, January 26 at noon. To view the service at 12:00 Noon on Friday, please navigate to the services section and click on “JOIN LIVESTREAM”.

Interment will be at Bet Olam Cemetery. Shiva will take place Saturday evening from 7:30-9:30pm and Sunday from 2-4pm and 7:30-9pm at the home of Greer Glazer, 36680 Blackberry Circle in Solon. The family will continue receiving friends through January 31st from 9-11am and 4-7pm daily at Clara Hagerling’s home, 4398 Silsby Rd. in University Hts.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland and StandUp for Kids.

Oh so sorry to learn of Gwen's death.  She was definitely one of my favorite people from Coventry and Roosevelt.  I remember a Coventry class play, written by Karyl Barron-- something with a princess and a witch.  Gwen was the witch and was she ever talented!  She was by far the best actress among us. (Sorry Bruce!  I think you were also in this play?)

Another memory:  the first boy-girl dance at Roosevelt, held right after school in the daytime. Afterwards I walked home down Euclid Heights Blvd.  I saw Gwen walking behind me and waited for her to catch up.  She was walking really funny.  Why?  First time we ever wore nylon stockings--panty hose hadn't been invented yet--and no one told her that they needed to be held up by garters.

I will think of Gwen often.
