Obituary

Margaret “Mawby" Ann Johns Young went to be with Jesus on August 28, 2021, at age 70.

Margaret was born to Henry James Washington and Wilma J. Mitchell in April 1951, in Paris, Texas. As a child, Mawby and her sisters sold seeds, went hiking in the hills of Salt Lake City, Utah and were proud members of the Jackson 5 Fan Club. When the family moved to Ohio, Margaret was a majorette at Heights High in Shaker, and graduated with academic honors.

Margaret met her husband, Jerome A. Young, Sr. (“Jerry”) at The Ohio State University. Jerry gave her the family nicknames “Johnnie - Mae” and “Mawby”. The pair joined the Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha fraternities respectively; and shared a love that spanned over 30 years. They married in 1979 and had four children: Jerome Jr., Jessica, Jennifer and Judith. Margaret worked as a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance, before the family moved to Nevada in 1986. After working at America West Airlines, Margaret made the sacrifice of her career and dedicated her life to raising, loving and encouraging her four children to be their very best. They honor and express their sincere gratitude for her through their various talents, achievements and acts of kindness.

Margaret enjoyed bowling, traveling with Jerry, serving her community through The Links Incorporated and her church, and promoting literacy in the Las Vegas community. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her and instilled deeply in her children. Margaret was always known to: lend a hand; offer kindness or a warm meal; and make good friends out of new acquaintances. She enriched the lives of everyone around her with her warm smile and sense of humor. Margaret relocated from Las Vegas to Auburn, Massachusetts in January of 2019, and spent her time loving and being loved by her family and friends, both near and far.

Margaret joins her husband Jerry, daughter Jessica and their ancestors in Heaven. She is survived by her children: Jerome, Jennifer, Judith and Steven, her siblings: Carolyn Kalil, Gwendolyn Haynesworth, Wiletta King Lynch, Kathi Scott, Deborah Simerka, Wendy Johns, and Tennyson Washington; her grandchildren: Joseph, Jacob, Juliana, Jenna Jianna, Jailynn, Jeremiah, and Maeve; and great grandson Josiah, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved her deeply.
