Leila Campbell (-Cosby)

Obituary for Leila Cosby

In the early morning hours of July 6, 2014, Leila Cosby, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher passed away at her home in Frost, Texas, surrounded by those who loved her most. Leila was married for fifty years to the love of her life, Dale Cosby. She was the beloved mother of Claire Ann Cosby Skierski and adored grandmother of James and Casey Skierski, all of Grand Prairie. Additionally, she is survived by Luther Lee and Dorothy Campbell, Douglas Campbell, Kathleen and Mark Walker, and her many nieces and nephews. Her parents Luther Lee and Madelyn Ruth Campbell precede her in death.

Mrs. Cosby, as she was well known, taught English in several school districts over her thirty two years of teaching including Frisco, Sinton, Spurger, Frost, and Ganado ISDs in addition to a year of teaching with both Dale and Claire at Al Hedayah Academy in Arlington, Texas. In this time, her belief in her students and insistence on high performance changed thousands of lives. Whether it was in the classroom or for one of the many academic contests in which she was involved, she inspired excellence in her students.

After retirement, she became an avid quilter and her grandsons were the lucky recipients of many of those quilts. James and Casey were the joy of her life, and they enjoyed a close relationship with her.

The discovery of pancreatic cancer in May was a shock, and her decline after the diagnosis, swift. She passed away as she wished, however, at home with her family. To say she will be missed does not do justice to this loss, but she will be missed.

Memorial service will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 11, 2014 at Frost United Methodist Church.

Leila was one of the class of '59 graduates with whom I was in Fisher Elementry, Hamilin Jr. Hi, and of course WB Ray.  Because of the closeness of our last names we were always in Home Room together.  During our school years we knew each other quite well.  I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

Her parents were my Sunday School Teachers when I was in High School.  Later, after moving back to Portland, TX, I was still close to her parents and her family.  She was unique in that she never, no matter what happened, ever looked at the events in her life as negative.  She was special, and I and my family will miss her.

God put special people like her on the earth for good reason, to enrich our lives.

Had enjoyable chat with Leila earlier this year when I was making calls re our 55th reunion.  She sounded upbeat and said that she was enjoying life with her family, despite a few health issues (this was prior to her diagnosis of cancer).  My thoughts are with her family and close friends.
