Danny was a great person.  At the time of his death he was pastor of a quite large church in Chino.  I attended his funeral service at his church.  It’s been so long now I can’t remember who I went with but it was other fellow graduates.  He died of stomach cancer.  Hard to believe a man who never smoked or drank and was a runner would succumb to that dreaded disease.  He married someone from the class of 1969 and had several children.  His brother, David (class of 1967) spoke at his funeral.  It seems to me that he was also a pastor somewhere in the Bakersfield area.  My memory may be failing me and someone out there knows more than me.  I just know I was so saddened by his death at such a realtively young age.

Obituary:

Pastor Dan Vasquez Dead at Age 42

"He was a man that cared about every individual he met, and that was so obvious," said Carol McGirr, a close friend, describing Dan Vasquez, Pastor of Chino Valley Community Church, who died of cancer July 9. He was 42.

He had been pastor of Chino Valley Community Church for 13 years, from the time of his ordination in 1980. The church was then known as the First Southern Baptist Church.
Mr. Vasquez was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Covina High School in 1968. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Biola in 1973 with a BA. In 1987, he earned his Masters Degree from California Graduate School of Theology.
He was a Chino resident since 1978.
"People were drawn to him," said Mrs. McGirr, director of women's ministries.
Pastor Dan was totally dedicated to his church and congregation, said Mrs. McGirr. He was politically aware and held many causes dear. One such cause was Chain of Life held in October each year. He also participated in last year's National Day of Prayer.
Mrs. McGirr said Pastor Dan developed the congregation at Chino Valley Community Church from a very small number of people, to outgrowing its facility of Riverside Drive, forcing the congregation to seek a new facility The congregation of approximately 750 now meets weekly at Don Lugo High School while the church seeks to purchase property.
"The timing of this is all confusing," said Paul McGirr who has been looking for potential property and was to report his findings to Pastor Vasquez before his passing.
"Many of us have a strong belief it wasn't his time yet," he said. "From here on out will be a test of faith as to the direction it takes and the place that God leads us.
Pastor Jim Piper, who worked under Mr. Vasquez a number of years, will take over the duties as pastor.
Funeral services were held yesterday (Tuesday) at Calvary Church in Chino.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years Beverly of Chino; son Daniel J. Vasquez, Jr. of Chino; daughters Jennifer Jo and Jody Lynn Vasquez, both of Chino; parents Johnny and Ruthie Vasquez of Covina; brothers David Vasquez of Fresno and Duane Vasquez of West Covina; and sister Linda Everman of Covina. A brother Donnie Vasquez preceded him in death at the age of 7.
A memorial fund has been established. For information contact the church at 627-1147.
Forest Lawn Mortuary in Covina Hills, handled the arrangements.
