DEREK Mr. Derek Charles Vanderbunt, 39 of the Cleveland/Helen, Georgia area, formerly of Covington, Georgia, died March 18 at Abbey Hospice, Social Circle, GA. The son of Bruce and Deborah Vanderbunt, he was born in 1967 in Wauseon, Ohio. Mr. Vanderbunt was a 1986 graduate of Newton County Comprehensive High School, attended United States Naval Academy and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He worked as an executive chef in Atlanta for two years, New Orleans for seven years and most recently in Helen, Georgia. Mr. Vanderbunt was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandson, cousin and friend. Surviving are wife Gretchen Vanderbunt of the Cleveland/Helen Georgia area; daughter Evelyn Kay Vanderbunt, 4; son, Garret Ellis Vanderbunt, 2; parents Bruce and Deborah Vanderbunt of Oxford, GA; brother and sister-in-law Dustin and Heather Vanderbunt of Asheville, NC; mother and father-in-law Tom and Stella Stroh of Dahlonega, GA; brother-in-law Roy Stroh of Dahlonega, GA; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Ms. Stephanie Speere, Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond (Elizabeth) Rasmussen, Michigan; grandfather Gene Vanderbunt, Wauseon, Ohio; numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from noon to 2pm, Thursday, March 22 at Wheeler Funeral Home in Covington, GA. A memorial service will be held 2PM Thursday, March 22, in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home.
