Hope everyone had fun at the reunion. Wish I could have been there. Any chance of reunion pictures being posted?

Yes, I did. Was deciding whether to go or not. Probably won't go.

Seth Wilder

No pressure, and I kind of wonder if anyone remembers me given my spotty attendance, but I'm in kind of dire straits as detailed below:

I'm Seth Adam Wilder, and I'm on the brink of financial ruin due to unforeseen and ongoing medical expenses related to several health issues. How did I end up in such dire straits? I'm reminded of that Hemingway quote where he described it as "slowly at first, then all at once."

Not to make light of it, but I feel inclined to laugh a bit, if only to keep from coming unglued. It feels like such a cliché to say this, but, undoubtedly like most people in this situation, I somehow never thought this would happen to me.

Several years ago, I left my corporate life to pursue my academic dream to earn a doctorate in cinema studies. I'm still pursuing that goal, but for a host of reasons, including medical issues, it's taking longer than anticipated. As you might imagine, it also isn't at all lucrative, leading to more precarious finances—especially now that my funding has ended.

Added to this, the pandemic hit, which kind of threw things in disarray and slowed my progress towards the degree. Unfortunately, after the pandemic, I was diagnosed with a congenital heart valve issue which required open heart surgery. Student insurance is not exactly platinum coverage, and the expenses of that procedure further exacerbated my financial issues.

Subsequent to that, I've struggled with depression and anxiety–apparently common in the aftermath of heart surgery—which likewise stressed my financial state indirectly, by fostering a certain amount of denial.

Additionally, I have recently learned I have additional health issues including degenerative disc disease in my neck and the kinds of issues that often plague men over 50. The former issue has also, of late, caused me to experience cluster headaches. The state of affairs means it's taking a lot for me just to continue to teach and pursue the degree.

This campaign is my initial attempt to avoid bankruptcy and attain a bit of breathing room so I can continue on my path. As a fairly private person, I am uncomfortable putting myself out here, but trying to remain optimistic about my prospects. Any donations are greatly appreciated.
