WRA Architects Designs New Additions & Renovations for Dallas ISD Hillcrest High School

Hillcrest High School Addition Video: https://youtu.be/IEdmEEGVLMs

Hillcrest High School is a historic and highly respected institution in the Dallas Independent School District. Opened in the mid 1930’s as Vickery Meadows High School, this Dallas icon has been in continuous operation for eighty years. In 1951, the modest wood frame building was expanded with a large concrete frame addition and the name changed to Hillcrest High School as it became an anchor in the developing Preston Hollow neighborhood of north Dallas. Hillcrest alumni have become leaders in all walks of life, many of them still calling Dallas their home. Since then, few changes have been made to the campus.

The Dallas Independent School District’s 2015 bond program will include removal of the 1930’s wood frame structure from the center of the campus. Three major additions will be constructed to provide much needed upgrades to student security, expansion of the core food service and athletic facilities, classrooms and technology to insure Hillcrest students will have the resources to lead through the 21st century.

The addition facing Aberdeen Avenue on the south side of the site will be the new location for the school’s main entrance, adjacent to existing visitor parking. The new reception area is located to receive visitors and have clear vision of the outside and any person who approaches the school. The entry vestibule will be secured during school hours requiring all who enter to check-in at the main office and be badged before entry. The Hillcrest High School alumni association assisted the architect in designing a graphic timeline which will be located in the main entry corridor.

The Hillcrest Road addition on the west side of the site will primarily house new classrooms and classroom support spaces. The two-story addition will centralize the majority of the academic areas in the building and allow for removal of all the portable classrooms from the site. Five light wells in the new classroom addition will bring natural light into all new and existing interior classrooms. The base of the double volume light wells is designed to be student collaboration space, giving the campus a collegiate feel.

The new locker facility and competition gymnasium addition will be located facing Lakehurst Avenue on the north side of the campus. Taking advantage of the slope of the site, the locker room is designed to be beneath the gymnasium and lobby above. This minimizes the footprint of the building and provides direct access from the locker room to the track and field. Once the portable classrooms have been removed, the area will be used for additional parking and the construction of a legitimate loading dock for the kitchen and the school.

The center of the campus, which will be open space following the removal of the old competition gym, will be converted into a large, enclosed courtyard. Designed as a student and faculty amenity, the new courtyard will expand the concepts of the original smaller courtyard created and maintained with funds donated by the Park Cities Rotary Club. This outdoor space will be used for circulation, small group learning and informal gathering.

Thanks to the Dallas ISD 2015 Bond Program, Hillcrest High School will begin a new chapter, well-equipped to serve its students through the 21st century.

On Friday, May 13 our classmate Ira Tobolowsky passed away.  A Dallas News update follows.

Dallas attorney’s death in suspicious fire ‘was a hit,’ friend tells ‘Today’ show

The mysterious death of a local lawyer was part of the lineup on the Today show this morning — and one of his friends told the show he believes the death “was a hit.”

Ira Tobolowsky, a longtime civil lawyer, was found dead in his garage last week after a fire in his apartment.

Officials said the fire was suspicious but have yet to release details about the circumstances that led to Tobolowsky’s death.

Tobolowsky’s friend, also a prominent lawyer in the Dallas area, told the Today show that he believes the 68-year-old was slain.WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported that his body was doused in fuel.

“This was a hit. There’s no question in my mind this was a hit. … It just had to be criminal,” Robert Hinton told Today. “It was disguised as a fire to cover a hit.”

Tobolowsky, described as a “lawyer who loved the law” by his brother-in-law, was involved in contentious litigation before he died.

“He was brave, and he would not be the guy to be afraid of anything. And I certainly can’t imagine that he imagined that this was possible,” his brother-in-law Stuart Prescott told our media partners at KXAS-TV (NBC5).

Judge Eric Moyé, who was presiding over the litigation, has been warned of a possible connection between the case and Tobolowsky’s death, his office said in a statement toToday. Moyé removed himself from the case on Wednesday.

The Dallas County sheriff’s office provided security to the judge over the weekend, and the judge’s bailiffs had been warned to be on alert.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate whether Tobolowsky’s death was related to arson. In a news release Monday, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said none of the houses nearby had surveillance video, which could have helped with the investigation.

Tobolowsky’s son was reportedly planning to get married in two weeks.

The family — which includes state District Judge Emily Tobolowsky and Groundhog Dayactor Stephen Tobolowsky — has long been active in the Jewish community and the legal profession.

Wonderful Reunion...we will share memories on the website for years to come.  Please post photos and videos from the Reunion weekend.  Stay tuned for updates!

Special THANKS to Susan Cuellar for her leadership and for the entire Reunion Committee.  Here's the certificate Susan got on Saturday evening:

Do you recognize your classmates from a June 4th planning meeting for Hillcrest ’65?

The Hillcrest ’65 reunion is really coming together! More than 20 people have worked on a variety of projects so far. Janice Nelson Offerman and Dusty Nelms have led the search for ‘lost’ classmates. Out of approximately 585 persons, Janice’s committee has found contact information for all but 95. This website lists both the memorials and those we have ‘lost’. Please encourage old friends to register and share both stories and pictures. So far, we have some great stories from Joe Cawthon, Roxanna Dunn and others. They can only be read by registered classmates.

The Reunion Committee is sponsoring a contest for registrations at the website. The grade school group with the greatest number of registrants will be recognized at the reunion and receive a prize! Even if you cannot attend in September, your registration will be counted and your name will be listed. The groups contending are: George B. Dealey, Arthur Kramer, John Pershing, Preston Hollow, Dan D. Rogers and the group we call ‘the sophisticates’- all those who went to school elsewhere. So far in the registrations , classmates have talked about schooling not only in the U.S., but also overseas.

Who is serving on the committee? In alphabetical order, they are: David and Sue Tarpley Cox; Ted Crow; Susan DeLee Cuellar; Betsy Halpin Barrett; Joleta Bailey Bishop; Ronni Julius Einsohn; Steve Golman; Kathy Winniford Jackson; Ellen Yarrin Lasser; Pat Hall Lockerd;
Jean Stevenson Moize; Cindy Boswell Nienheuser; Janice Nelson Offerman; Nancee Guess Shanks; Fred Shapiro; Toby Weston Shawn; Carol Gaynor Schleuter; Sharon McIntyre Stevenson; Peter Vogel; Steve Watson; Libbie Wilson Wilmer; and Paula Williams. Others will be helping as the reunion approaches. If any of you are adept at desk top publishing or design, the committee would appreciate your help. We are still working to create a logo for this special weekend. If you could help during the reunion, please contact Susan DeLee Cuellar at  cuellar.susan @gmail.com

We would also enjoy seeing photos from the past: a Scout troop, intramural team, the all night party at Brookhaven Country Club or the Prom at S.M.U would all be interesting to our classmates. In this age of “selfies”, it is hard to believe that we do not have many pictures from the past or present posted on the website. In many ways, we lived the era of the television series, “Mad Men”- without the commuter trains or cocktails at lunch. Our photos capture that era.

Here is the first of many questions: Please name your three favorite bands of 1960-65. Put your answer on your registered page. We will count them and share in a couple of weeks. This will be given to the D.J.
