Lynn Hayes Hagood was a Gordon- Bibber from grades 1-6, and we were in the same room for the first five. He was one of my best friends during that time. He lived on 4th Ave South just a few houses away from the ever irreverant  Eddie Tiller on one side and a portly classmate named Wiley Owens (  who we called Wilety Bum sometimes) on the other. Lynn Hayes was always referred to as Lynn Hayes for the same reason Linda Lee Clark was always Linda Lee and Jimmy Don Jackson was always Jimmy Don--but I do know what that reason was.

Lynn Hayes was always one of the nicest  boys in the class, somewhat shy, but always with a smile. He was always slim and fast while I was always a little chubby and slow. In high school he could run the 100 yard dash in under 11 seconds but I never broke that barrier.

In 5th grade we both had a crush on Davene Nichols and argued about who she liked best. We once had a laughing "fight" over her that I think ended in a draw. Davene never showed much interest in either of us but I know she liked me best.

In 8th grade we both went out for football--he as a running back and me pretending to be a quarterback. When the coach(Smith) passed out the equipment-- shoes, shoulder pads, and the like, he did it on the prospect's  potenntial value to the team. Lynn Hayes got good stuff, but I got an old-fashioned Leather helment, shoulder pads with parts missing, but worst of all shoes whose cleats were loose and hurt my feet with every step no matter  how much cardboard I put in. One week Lynn Hayes was sick and let me use his stuff. I was in heaven and would have been an All-American had he not gotten well.

I did not go to DHS for the 9th grade, and when I returned for the last three years, the scrambled class procedure prevented Lynn Hayes and me from being as close as we were as grade-schoolers, but I always liked him. After high school I basically left Decatur, and I don't remember seeing Lynn Hayes again, although I asked Eddie about him at our reunions and always ot good reports. As I said about Kenneth Bolding and believe about so many Gordon-Bibbers, I know Lynn Hayes had to have been a good man because he was such a good boy. Richard Allen
