My mother started teaching physical science at DHS the same year I started as a freshman. I was fortunate. I always had a ride and a friend at the school. My father died of lung cancer the year before and I found solace in books and libraries. My mother was a good person. Strong and solid as a rock. She lived to be 96 years old. She was amazing. I miss her. She loved Deerfield and the high school where she worked until the of age of 71. She was always there for me, my sisters and my family. She kept plants in the atrium of the high school. She would bring them to our backyard in the summer and then return them to the school in the fall. One summer my sisters, Mary Joh ('64) and Gretchen ('67), my mom and I were relaxing in the backyard when we realized one of the plants she had brought home from DHS was a large marijauna plant!!! Mom had no idea who it belonged to. She had been encouraged to bring it home with the others. She had no idea what it was. We had a good laugh about it.
