Dear Deerfield 1963 classmates,
It is hard to believe that we are now at the 50th reunion. It seems a short while ago that we had the 25th reunion. The Deerfield experience had a great impact on my life. It gave me confidence in academics, exposed me to people from diverse backgrounds and gave me a competitive edge. The combination of athletics, Sunday night sing, study hall, famous speakers and the beauty of the surroundings all were a wonderful experience. The most important thing, of course, were the friendships formed in those formative years. Deerfield contributed to my identity and made me one who sought out truth and the ability to see through hypocrisy. After the University of North Carolina I served as a military pilot in the USAF for five years. I married and had two wonderful children who are both married and have children. I worked in the business world and got very involved in the church world after a "born again" experience.
This resulted in seminary for three years and two pastorates. I have had the privilege to travel extensively in gospel work into many countries. After the Obama reelection it now seems our country is entering an escalating moral freefall. The America I grew up in no longer exists. My hope rests, though, in my faith in God and my trust in those who are my friends. May we have a wonderful reunion. I was surprised to find that several of our classmates had passed away. Your fellow classmate and sojourner. Jim Dykes
