Dr. Edward Garner Flickinger, 69, of Nashua and Glen, NH, passed away on Saturday, June 25th, with his wife of 47 years by his side.
Ed is survived by wife Karen Pope Flickinger; son Seraph Garner Flickinger and daughter-in-law Carla Kewan Flickinger and grandchildren, Raleigh Marie, Marlee Elizabeth, Edward Seraph, Carleigh Olga, Mercedes Nelson, Maressa Nelson, Kyle Wake and great grand-daughter Hayleigh Brunner; son Gavin Edward Flickinger, daughter-in-law Heidi Elizabeth Taylor and grandson Tarpen Taylor and baby #2 due July 2016; daughter Carrie Flickinger Diana, son-in-law Matthew James MacInnes Diana and grandson Owen Matthew; Brother Lt. Col. Lowell Flickinger; Sister Mila Flickinger Pierce; Brother Donald Ian Flickinger and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Lima, Ohio and educated in the public schools through junior high school. He then attended Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA, for four years. There, he was president of his class, played basketball, football and lacrosse, and won the Deerfield Cup for outstanding student. He attended the University of North Carolina as a Morehead Scholar, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member and Vice President of Chi Psi fraternity. He attended Duke University Medical School, was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and was chosen by a vote of his peers to give the graduation speech.
He trained at University Hospitals Cleveland, Ohio, was on the staff at Metro General Hospital Cleveland, Ohio. Became a professor of Surgery at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Was Vice Chairman of General Surgery at the University of Rochester and attended the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Saunders College of Business where he received his MBA while Chief of Surgery at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was on the staff as a General Surgeon at Memorial Hospital North Conway, NH. And more recently on staff at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH.
