Doug,   I do remember those catechism classes.. All those Saturday mornings!!!!  Then our 4 kids did the same thing... I realized how hard it must have been for my parents... What's the old saying, "What goes around comes around." frown Hope all is well with you. Stay warm.. God's Peace...

Yes Lois, that was Jack Vogel. He was one I couldn't remember. I don't have my picture right now but there was a blond short haired girl that I didn't know either. As for Jackie, I talked to Jim around Christmas and he said she was about the same or maybe a little worse. They still go on trips with the family and recently went to Disneyworld so it doesn't keep her down. Jackie's a fighter.  Doug

Hi Doug and Lois, and Larry, and Sally!!

I sure do remember catechism classes at St. Paul's....well, maybe a little.  ha!  I took them all over again (perhaps an abbreviated version and perhaps not?) when I joined an LCMS church here in Lafayette almost 20 years ago.    It was a good "brushup" and refresher....and much of it seems to have a much deeper meaning at age 51 then when I was 13 or so!     I also had taken Catholic catechism classes before I could get married in the Catholic church....that was way back in 1965.   I should maybe have all the answers?  ha ha!  'Fraid not.

Good to hear from everyone.....I hope Larry's knee is behaving and responding to therapy well.  Sorry to hear that Jackie isn't a whole lot better these days, but delighted to hear that she is tooting around with family and having fun.   I always have loved Disney.....but not able to do all that walking anymore, so I'm glad I went when I could!

It was a balmy 37 degrees in Lafayette, Indiana today....just hardly didn't need my gloves!  ha ha!  More snow coming tonight and then below zero temps again.  I know spring will get here eventually and it will be SWEET!!!

    Hugs to everyone,

Marianna

Hi Doug, Larry Lois ,and Sally,

AAAAHH,yes ,sunny flordia, been down here since late Oct. and am addicted to the warm. Hey Larry, Doo all of the knee rehab stuff,(exercises) You only get 9-10 wks untill it's at its best. I'm playing golf like never before,(Right Knee). Its totally pain free. It's tough to leave all the grandkids and family up north but the joints feel so good down here. And the fishing is great! OH, I'm gettin' ready, Lois!   Got a few groceries this afternoon on the way home but forgot the bread....ha ha!  My mailbox got knocked down this morning (delivery truck) and I managed to get the box onto an old beat up saw-horse anchored down with bungee cords!    Even have the newspaper box bungee corded to the side of it!  hee hee!  The wooden post with the handpainted mailbox has been in place for over 20 years....so I guess it's lived out it's usefulness.....but can't dig a new post hole for awhile yet!

At any rate, I think it will serve until then.....just makes it look like an old lady lives here.  hee hee!

Stay warm and safe.  And, you know, the older I get, the more people I know who either LIVE in Florida or spend the winters there.  You've gotta be tough to stick it out in our parts.....or touched in the head.    ha ha ha!

I think Lois is right too, Doug.  And wasn't Vada Wiselogle (is that her last name??) in our confirmation class too?  Also Jean Agler, Sue Parker, Jane Block, Bill Parker.....(or were they mentioned earlier?).   Fun times....oh, Karen Weaner was in our class too.    Seems like there were others....and I just can't remember.  Not sure where my class picture is...that would be helpful. ha ha!

Yes, and also Keith Shaffer, Larry Kammeyer and Bill Spencer. I just heard the other day that Bill died recently but I don't know any details. Bill Parker was not in our catechism class. He might have been Methodist. He's  Lutheran since he and Jane have been married.

I talked to Bills sister Ann Hillman (419-784-2440) today and she did tell me he died Dec. 23rd. of this year of  bone cancer. She said if anybody has any questions they can call her at the above number. I don't think he'd ever been back to any reunions  If any Spencer School kids can remember, we did a Lewis and Clark play in the fourth grade and Billy Spencer, Larry Grube and I were the Indians. (very important part)

I'm sorry to hear about Bill Spencer's death....there is no information on his class profile....Doug, do you know where he lived or anything else about his life?  Was there an obituary in the Cresent?  I didn't see it if there was.

I had to chuckle at the "very important part" that you Indians were!  I am SURE you were!  Since I went to Slocum, I have no recollection of that.  ha ha!

Still very wintery tonight....more snow and cold coming.  blah.  This seems to be an awfully LOOOOONG winter and it's not even February yet.  yikers!

Good to hear from everyone.  Thanks for the news about Bill, Doug.

(oh, and I forgot that Bill Parker wasn't a cradle Lutheran....I am going to have to LOOK for our confirmation class picture....)

It's nice to see a few of you using this forum for trading information.  It's been here since day 1.

I too thought Bill Spencer had passed away years ago.  For infomational purposes, I will add him to the appropriate list with the little info we have.  As more info becomes available, I can add.

Please continue to use the forum and encourage others to join.

Thanks kids,

Jim Warncke

Thank you Gene, for posting that information on Joe.  Those of us who live in other states appreciate being kept informed.  I heard recently that Doug and Mary Davis lost a daughter.  Does anyone know if this is true?  If so, my heart goes out to them.  I would be the hardest things ever to happen to a parent.

Lois, I just read online (Crescent News) about Doug and Mary Davis' s daughter, Kathy.  Her married name was Hohenbrink, which is what caught my eye as I scanned through the obituaries.  She died about a week ago, I believe.  So very sad.

Marianna

Loved reading your remembrance of Joe ......:o)

04/17/14 08:51 AM #85

Lois Farris (Little)

Thanks for your reply, Marianna.  Hope everyone reading this will say a prayer for Doug and Mary that God will comfort them.  I just cannot imagine ....

On a lighter note, spring may be here FINALLY.  I did get some lettuce, beans, beets and onions planted on one of the few nice days that we had.  The lettuce is up already and I am feeling a burst of spring "git er dun" energy seeping into this tired (and old) body.

After leaving school I didn't see Joe for about 45 years, he came to work for my company and we became very good friends. My wife Nancy and I became friends with Joe and his wife Evie, and had some great times together. Joe was a very dedicated man, and would give anyone a helping hand.

He was also very  proud of his wife, kids and grandkids, and loved to brag about them, as he should be.

I can only say I will greatly miss his friendship. Gene Brown

Lois, just wanted to let you know I'm also a Hoosier, Northwest Indiana.

Also my thoughts and prayers go out to Doug and his wife.

I appreciated your added comments, Gene.  I had no idea what happened with Joe after high school.  My Mom and his Mom visited each other once in awhile after we all moved away from that neighborhood, but eventually even that ended.  I guess that is the way of life, huh?

He was a passionate member of the choir at St Timothy on the North Shore United Methodist Church for over 30 years and a proud reserve deputy for the St Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office in the Mounted Division from 2000-2015. Larry graduated from Defiance High School in 1960 and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1966. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corp from 1966-1968. After his Honorable Discharge, he completed his master's degree in Prosthodontics from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1969. CELEBRATING
LARRY BYRON MCMILLEN
April 18, 1942 – January 25, 2022.
Our Renaissance Man
Larry loved music and was a member of the New Orleans Opera Chorus as well as the Jefferson Parish Performing Arts, where he also served as a board member. When he moved to the Northshore, he continued his active participation in the Arts by becoming a Charter Member of the Northshore Performing Arts.
Larry has participated in equine competition for more than 35 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Louisiana Quarter Horse Association. He has competed in Barrel Racing, Team Penning and was State Champion in Amateur Reining. His love of horses was one of the reasons he became involved with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
During his tenure with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office – Mounted Division, he continued to push himself to be better at whatever he did. He was one of the first three reserve deputies in the Mounted Division to go through POST (similar to boot camp) with the full-time deputies and became a certified patrol deputy. He participated in mounted competition between different law enforcement agencies on behalf of St Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. He worked on special operations projects – one being search and rescue during Hurricane Katrina, only this was done on boats instead of horses. During his time with the Sheriff's Office, he combined his love of dentistry and his interest of law and order by becoming a certified forensic dentist.
Throughout his career as a Prosthodontist, he belonged to many organizations. Some of those organizations were: American Dental Association; Louisiana Dental Association; Northshore Dental Association; New Orleans Dental Association; the Seattle Study Club, Lake Pontchartrain Chapter; The American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics; The American College of Forensic Examiners; and the Academy of Denture Prosthetics. At one time, he was licensed in Louisiana, Florida, and Ohio. He co-authored a textbook on prosthodontics and his Master's Thesis was published in the Journal of Prosthodontics.
Larry believed in giving back. He showed that by providing pro-bono dentistry to various charity agencies, including Magnolia Children's Home and Dental Lifeline for Veterans. He has also sponsored local youth sports teams associated with the Magnolia Recreation Center.
Larry was a true Renaissance Man and touched many hearts throughout his life here on earth.

Thank you Marianna for posting about Larry McMillen. I had heard he had passed away and did some searches on my own but came up empty. He was a good friend since Little League. For some reason life seems to speed up the older we get. Right now it's at warp speed.

I had heard the rumur about Larry passing but was never able to confirm it. I tried the Internet for several weeks after but I could never find anything. Pehaps I was a little early.

Larry's daughter posted something about his death on Facebook....I kept checking the Crescent and online for a couple days, and then finally found the obituary when I googled his obituary in either Louisiana or the city he lived in (I don't remember now).  Larry and I were across the street neighbors growing up.....from third grade on.  Lots of fun neighborhood memories.  I'm sad that he has left us so soon.
