 Jim

You  and your brothers; Wesley & Bill came from Jamestown, NY to finish your schooling  with us at D. H. S. in  1961. A friend to many, I still remember your ever present smile. You maybe gone but you are not forgotten.

After searching for information about you for so many years we can finally lay you to rest thanks to your brother, Bill, who was kind enough to take the time to provide us with information.  You've been gone from us for quite some time, but will never be forgotten.  Rest in peace, Jim.

Here is the information provided by Jim's brother:  After high school, Jim received a chemical engineering degree from Ohio University and went on to get his masters. He met his wife at OU and they moved to Buffalo NY near Niagra Falls where he worked for Dow Chemical his brother thought.  In September of 1974 they had a daughter, Kristen, who is an attorney in Westerville OH. The month after her birth, Jim was fishing along the Niagra Falls River when his lure got snagged in some brush near the embankment of the swift flowing water.  While attempting to make his way down the slippery embankment, he slid into the river.  Witnesses said they thought he was going to make it back to shore when his body went limp and he was swept away.  His body was not found until a month later on the Canadian side in Canada.  Authorities felt he may have suffered a heart attack from the stress on his body trying to make it back to shore.

I appreciate Bill taking the time to share this tragic story with us.  Bill is a retired California Highway Patrol Officer.  Although this happened many years ago, our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family.

Hi Mary,

Bill Welcome just sent a message that told me a little about your 50th high school reunion and a memorial that would be held to remember those from your class who have passed away. He said that you may want some more information about Jim. Jim and I were married on Aug. 12 1967, several months after we both graduated from Ohio University. He worked for Durez Division of Hooker Chemical,(now Occidental Petroleum) North Tonawanda, NY, as a research chemist, but was drafted and left for the Army 6 weeks after we were married. I remained in the area as a teacher. He eventually was assigned to the Chemical Corps at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. At that time we lived in Baltimore MD. After his tour of duty, we returned to Amherst, NY, and eventually had a home in North Tonawanda. Jim went on to earn his Masters in Inorganic Chemistry from State University of NY at Buffalo. He began working on 4 of his own projects, and had completed a new type of resin, that led to a  patent. He was in the process of meeting with the patent lawyers at the time of his death. The patent was awarded posthumously, thus completing one of his long term goals. Jim became a father in September 1974 to Kristen. He was a very proud father. She was only 5 weeks old when he passed away on October 12, 1974.

Kristen now lives with her husband and daughter in Delaware, Ohio. Not too far from me.

If you would like more information, please let me know.

Best regards,

Beth Welcome

Blessings to Jim's wife and daughter.  What a brilliant person accomplishing his degree in such a difficult field even obtaining a patent and also serving his country .  We were fortunate to have known such a person even for a short time.
