Obituary from Des Moines Register:

DesMoines - DAVID DWIGHT NOEL, 79, was born in DesMoines Iowa, on 12/26/1939. He passed away on February 19, 2019, at Unity Point Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

For those who knew him, you knew him as a good cop, a great horseman, a wonderful "Poppa" [grandfather], a wonderfully loyal friend.

He was also the loving husband of Myrle J. Atwood-Noel and step-dad to Brian Atwood & Chris Atwood.

Dave served honorably in the US Navy as a Radarman/E4 from January 1957 to September 1960 when he was honorably discharged. He later joined the Army National Guard in June 1964 was commissioned as an Lieutenant in June 1968. He then transferred over to the US Army Reserve in June 1980. It was there that Dave was accepted in flight school and he earned his wings. He retired from the USAR as a Major in June 1991.

In December 1962, Dave was accepted on to the Des Moines Police Department as a police officer. It took two attempts because he was too skinny, the first time, to meet minimum weight standards. He was promoted to Sergeant in August 1970 and retired from the DMPD in June 1996. He had so many "war stories" from that time of his life and he loved that job. During the 1970s, Dave served as the helicopter pilot for the DMPD and loved every second of it.

Dave and Myrle Atwood were married on March 15, 2010 in Eminence, Missouri, a beautiful vacation spot they both loved and at which they would ride their horses in the mountains every year, for 10 days. Despite numerous legal problems with Dave's daughters, Dave and Myrle were still very happily married at the time of his passing.

Dave was pre-deceased by both maternal and paternal grandparents, his mother, Marjorie, his step-mother, Margaret, his father, Floyd, his sister Bonnie and his brother, Paul. He is survived by his wife, Myrle, and his step-sons, Brian Atwood and Chris Atwood, his sister, Kathy Reynolds and brother, John Noel.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be on Friday, February 22, 2019, from 5 to 7 PM. A prayer service following the visitation. Cremation rights will be conducted after the prayer service.
