Ernest McGinn

Ernest Allen "Ernie" McGinn, 33, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Iles Funeral Homes- Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue. His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the funeral home. His family will also receive friends following the service from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Madrid Community Room, 303 S. Water Street, Madrid. Cremation will follow the service, and private burial will be at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Madrid.

Ernie was born August 16, 1972, the son of Craig McGinn and Valerie Chapman in Davenport. Ernie began school in Quincy, Illinois, and his family moved to Des Moines when he was in first grade. Ernie was a graduate of East High School. He played soccer all of his life and was an excellent musician. Ernie played drums since he was four years old and was a founding and long term member of a local band, Killpact. He loved animals, especially his dog Gina, fishing, spending time outdoors and trips to Wisconsin and Canada. Ernie was a trained carpenter and a member of the Glaziers local 1075, D.C. 81. He was currently working at Architectural Wall Systems in West Des Moines.

Ernie was preceded in death by his grandparents, Allan Hanson and Natalie Moore and great grandfather, Bill Pettit.

He is survived by his parents, Dan and Valerie Chapman of Madrid; stepbrother, Justin Chapman of Ridgecrest, CA; grandparents, Marilyn & Merle Hermundson of Nelson, WI and Robert Moore of Cibole, AZ; great-grandmother, Marie Pettit of Yermo, CA; aunts, Roxanne & Cip Garcia of Montgomery, IL, Vicki & Ted Mannes of Colfax, WI, Brenda & Pete Bird of Des Moines and Kalissa & Glen Maki of Kernville, CA; numerous cousins, other family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

I remember Ernie as a fun and adorable member of the band.  A dynamic drummer, Ernie could always be counted on to deliver a smile and humor to band practice.  It is a true tragedy that Ernie passed way before his time.
