Esther M. Black

Esther  Black (nee Lyons), age 87, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on December 26, 2023. She had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer several months earlier.

Esther was born in Philadelphia to the late Joseph and Esther (Aquilino) Lyons. She grew up in the Crescentville & Mayfair neighborhoods in Philadelphia and attended Lincoln High School. When her family moved temporarily to Detroit, she attended Mackenzie High School there.

Esther always  enjoyed dancing. As a teenager in the early ‘50’s, she danced on  the original Bandstand tv show in West Philadelphia, hosted by Dick Clark’s predecessor, Bob Horn.

She worked as a waitress from the 1960’s until 2022.  Some of the Philadelphia establishments she worked for include Hot Shoppes, The Shack on the Blvd., the Italian Bistro and, most recently, The Philmont Country Club. 

Esther is survived by 3 daughters; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren & 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara (Lyons) Stokes. 

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, followed by a luncheon, at the Philmont Country Club, 301 Tomlinson Rd., Huntington Valley, PA. 19006.
