Bob McLean (1959)

McLean, Robert (Bob) W., age 80, of Torch Lake, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, surrounded by his family. Surviving is his loving wife of 32 years, Susan McLean; children: Thomas (Pamela) McLean, Timothy McLean (Paul Santello), Megan McLean, Melissa (Brian) Keeley; six grandchildren: Madalyn (Nicholas) Ver Woert, Allyson McLean, Nathan Keeley, Trevor Keeley, Ruby Ervin-McLean and Iris Ervin-McLean. Bob was born in Detroit and was a varsity athlete at Mackenzie High School where he excelled in basketball, swimming and golf. He graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1963 and earned his M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1966. Bob's career encompassed the worlds of finance, consulting and insurance. Bob concluded his career at Merrill Lynch where he worked in partnership with his wife, Susan, until his retirement in 2001. He also served on the board of directors of Kalamazoo College for 17 years, as well as the boards of Durametallic and Safari Circuits Inc. Bob was quietly generous to an extraordinary number of charities. Bob was passionate about UM football, golf, boating and traveling the world with his wife. He always had a smile on his face, a booming laugh and a strong moral compass. Bob was blessed with many wonderful friends. Bob loved having a Manhattan in Susan's beautiful garden on Torch Lake, with his golden retriever, while watching the sunset. In remembrance of Bob's life, his family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Torch Lake Protection Alliance, PO Box 706, Bellaire, MI 49615, or to the woundedwarriorproject.org.

Knowing Bob from McFarlane Elementary and Mackenzie High  days, how meaningfully uplifting to read how his life went on, fulfilling his kind and precious "way of being," evident and begun "back in the day." What a beautiful person from the get-go. I'm sorry for your loss and glad for blessings he leaves with all, eternally.

Bob was a wonderful Classmate at Mackenzie High and McFarlane Elementary: I am thankful Bob and his wife were able to make it to one of our Mackenzie picnics several years ago. May the comfort of friends and family be Bob's family strenght now and in the days ahead. God Bless,

Elizabeth L. (Schmidt) McGill, Class of '59
