Comments:

Married 1969. Moved to Washington, D.C. and worked as an association manager and lobbyist for about 12 years. Then purchased and operated an FM radio station in Jackson, CA, for about 19 years. My wife and I bicycled from the Oregon Coast to our home in Washington, D.C. After our bike adventure we raised two children, one of whom now works in communications, and the other in insurance. Each have produced one grandson—so far. Moved to San Luis Obispo, CA, where my principle activities have included bicycling, working at the local public radio station, and extensive travel.

School Story:

My primary extra-curricular activity was performing in plays.

About my career:

My first career was as a scholar, earning a Ph’d at the University of Pennsylvania. Then I took a job as a lobbyist with the International City Management Association, eventually becoming a deputy executive director. I then purchased and operated a commercial FM station in the California Gold Country for 20 years. Since selling the station in 2004 I have dabbled in radio, bicycling and travel.

Mackenzie Memories:

My first year included a class schedule that began around 11 AM. The work was tedious and fellowship was nonexistent. Things changed for the better in the sophomore year.

Education after Mackenzie:

I earned a BA at the University of Michigan in 1965, an MA at the University of Iowa in 1967, and a Ph’d at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.

What Elementary School did you go to?:

Parkman Elementary in Detroit

I'm not sure I've ever felt closer to any man than I was to Carl. This is in spite of the fact that we graduated from different universities, had radically different family backgrounds and followed much different careers.  My recollection is that I served as Best Man at Carl's wedding, and he served in the same role in my wedding. He moved to Chicago for his career.  I moved to Philadelphia, where I met a resident in my small Center City apartment building, married her about six months later in a traditional Quaker ceremony.  We moved to Washington, D.C., where I was a top staff person for an international professional association, and my wife a top writer for a national news magazine. We bought and operated an FM radio station in California's Gold Country, gave birth to and raised a boy and girl.  The boy went to the U of M, the girl to U.C.L.A.  Along with a partner, we came to own three radio properties in California.  We operated the station in the Gold Country for about 19 years, sold it, and immediately moved to a town a few miles from the Pacific, where we have been comfortably retired for 20 plus years.  Our two children both have high status jobs in internationally prestigous organizations based hundreds of miles away.  So far they have given us three grandchildren.

Carl, Rodger, Ronnie, you and I created a very special bond between us that extended well beyond the three years we shared at Mackenzie. The bond remains vivid, special and unique in the intervening 60 or so years that took me to Iowa City, Philadelphia, California’s Gold Country and now a few miles from the Pacific. It remains vivid as I transitioned from being a scholar, to being a Washington lobbyist, an owner and operator of several radio stations in California. It remains vivid during a half-century marriage and the creation of two very successful children scattered from Connecticut to Oregon.
