I'm not sure I've ever felt closer to any man than I was to Carl. This is in spite of the fact that we graduated from different universities, had radically different family backgrounds and followed much different careers. My recollection is that I served as Best Man at Carl's wedding, and he served in the same role in my wedding. He moved to Chicago for his career. I moved to Philadelphia, where I met a resident in my small Center City apartment building, married her about six months later in a traditional Quaker ceremony. We moved to Washington, D.C., where I was a top staff person for an international professional association, and my wife a top writer for a national news magazine. We bought and operated an FM radio station in California's Gold Country, gave birth to and raised a boy and girl. The boy went to the U of M, the girl to U.C.L.A. Along with a partner, we came to own three radio properties in California. We operated the station in the Gold Country for about 19 years, sold it, and immediately moved to a town a few miles from the Pacific, where we have been comfortably retired for 20 plus years. Our two children both have high status jobs in internationally prestigous organizations based hundreds of miles away. So far they have given us three grandchildren.

Carl, Rodger, Ronnie, you and I created a very special bond between us that extended well beyond the three years we shared at Mackenzie. The bond remains vivid, special and unique in the intervening 60 or so years that took me to Iowa City, Philadelphia, California’s Gold Country and now a few miles from the Pacific. It remains vivid as I transitioned from being a scholar, to being a Washington lobbyist, an owner and operator of several radio stations in California. It remains vivid during a half-century marriage and the creation of two very successful children scattered from Connecticut to Oregon.
