In Memory

Ina Sheh (1957) (Stevens)

Obituaries in Detroit, MI | The Detroit Free Press

Beloved mother and Camp Walden director Ina Stevens, 81, passed away July 24 at her home in Fort Worth, TX. Ina Sheh was a nearly lifelong Detroiter, graduating from Mackenzie High School and only moving in 2017 to be nearer to family. After earning a teaching degree from Wayne State University, Ina began a career working with children. She met Walden co-founder Larry Stevens in 1963 and they were married in 1964, just after the camp season had ended, at the courthouse in Cheboygan, MI. Ina joined Larry as a Walden director in the early 90s, though prior to that she had founded the Walden Spa & Fitness Camp, studied landscape architecture and led popular aerobics classes at the YMCA and Jewish Community Center. She and Larry enjoyed season tickets to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Attic Theater, and she often reminisced about growing up in Detroit in the 40s and 50s. Ina's legacy will include the lasting impact she had on Walden campers and staff whom she lovingly, patiently and kindly embraced as part of the camp family. Her graceful spirit will forever imbue the woods and meadows of Walden. Ina is survived by daughters Rachel Stevens of Austin, TX; and Elizabeth Stevens (Scott Ruthart); and grandson Max Ruthart of Fort Worth; brother Russ Sheh (Kathy) of Stockton, CA; nieces Carol Agay of Costa Mesa, CA, and Jeannette Stevens Sapienza of New York City; nephew Michael Stevens (Erica Bose) of Los Angeles; and sister-in-law Rose Stevens of Fullerton, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Larry; parents James and Nakie Sheh, sister Edith Sheh; and niece Adrienne Agay. An online memorial service will begin at noon Eastern, on Sunday, November 7 (a link will be provided on Facebook). Donations can be made in Ina's name to the American Camp Association, or to a charitable organization of your choice.

Dearest Ina ... I was a McKenzie High School freshman when Ina was a senior. I knew her for one semester in  one hour, 'student council,' and all these years "never" have forgotten her, sort of 'my Ina' - a genuine gracious kind sweet person, forever was and is. She made an impression I've never forgotten - her embracing persona beautiful graceful smile, her default-empathy of focus outside of herself yet inwardly replenishing. Knowing her for only one semester in one class, yet today gives gratitude.
Recieve heartfelt condolences, wishes toward a long term well-being, lifting loving impacts she's granted .  My own gratitude is extended by reading what you share after HS - people and family and causes her life blessed, lifted, touched, amplified in her special way..   I too I am grateful to this day and beyond for Ina Sheh...
