Obituary for William "Lynn" Heraty

William “Lynn” Heraty, age 72, of Harsens Island, passed away on October 28, 2019 from lung and brain cancer. He was born on December 13, 1946, in Detroit.
He graduated from Mackenzie High School. He served in the USMC and was wounded at Khe Sanh. After Vietnam, he settled on Harsens Island, and on December 25, 1971, he married the love of his life, Deborah Heraty (nee Hinsley). He served 23 years on the Harsens Island Volunteer Fire Department. Early in life, he had several different jobs and never really liked any of them. His final 29 working years were spent at Champions Auto Ferry, which he never really considered a real job. Once retired, he and Debby loved to spend winters in Cape Coral, Florida, and he loved his friends there.
Prior to settling on Harsens Island, he spent his childhood summers at his Grandparents Lynn and Mary Jewell’s cottage on the flats. He loved Harsens Island, boating, the water, his family and sports, particularly golf. Despite never hitting the lottery, he never stopped trying, If you were his family or friend, you hit the lottery. And, if he knew you, he considered you a friend.
He is survived by his wife Deborah, son and daughter-in-law; Lynn and Mellisa, granddaughter, Elyse, brother Richard Heraty (Chris) , sister, Mary Sparkman (Greg), and brother-in-law, Paul Minnich.
He is predeceased by his parents; Richard and Frances Ruth Heraty, and sister, Theresa Minnich.
Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, if so inclined.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
