I'm so happy for this opportunity to reconnect with classmates.

For those who didn't know I am a first generation Peruvian-American. My father emigrated to attend Loras College in 1946. My mother is a 4th generation descendant of the Hanson and Butt Iowa pioneer families.

I have a B.A. in Liberal Arts (Major Anthropology) from the University of Iowa and 2 years of graduate school while working for the Iowa State Archaeologist. I moved to Washington state in 1976 and became a Labor Organizer with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1576 serving as their President Business Agent. I moved on to become Government Relations Director for the Washington Public Employees Association, WPEA/UFCW 365 until my retirement in 2009.

I was the first Latino elected to the House of Representatives in the Washington State Legislature serving from 2010-2016. Previously I served 3 terms as the State Secretary of the Washington State Democratic Party, 2005-2010. I was House Majority Vice-Chair of the House Transportation Committee and sponsored important legislation regarding voting rights, public safety and criminal justice reform, and transportation revenue funding.

I have been a volunteer tutor/mentor and Board Member with the Neutral Zone, an award winning anti-gang program that worked with at-risk youth, while serving as a member of the Mountlake Terrace City Council Community Policing Advisory Board. I was a founding member of the Communities of Color Coalition of Snohomish County (C3), the NAACP-Snohomish County, and the Snohomish County Citizen’s Committee for Human Rights.

I currently serve on the following Boards: Institute for Washington's Future (IWF); University Beyond Bars (UBB); Latino Educational Training Initiative (LETI); The Northshore Performing Arts Center Foundation; and All Aboard Washington!.

School Story

I was a very quiet student who rode the bus from St. Columbkille parish to Wahlert every day. Though many of you may remember me as the Lead Singer for The Dutch Uncle and playing KC and Riverside Bowl dances, and a Battle of the Bands Ramp dance.
