Obituary

Joseph Vincent McVinney

11/30/1943 - 12/28/2022

On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, Joseph Vincent McVinney passed away in comfort and peace, surrounded with love, at the age of 79.

Vince was born in Boston, MA in 1943. He was raised by his mother Florence Dearing and stepfather Francis Smith. He spent his formative years in Boston before moving to Clearwater, FL. He was a graduate of Dunedin High School and University of Florida. His career in hospitality management brought him to Memphis, TN where he quickly climbed to Sr VP of Operations for Holiday Inn Corporate. From there he transferred to Daytona Beach, FL where he met his beautiful wife, Diane Brown. They relocated to upstate NY to manage the Lake Placid Club. They eventually married and had two children: Patrick and Michael. Over the next decade, Vince's career took him and his family to the Carolinas, Kansas and Arizona and finally back to Volusia County, Florida in 1994 where he spent the remainder of his years. As Vince approached retirement, he left behind the stresses of hospitality management to sell luxury automobiles at local dealerships and timeshare along the shores of Daytona Beach.

As a young boy, Vince played every sport imaginable but, in particular, he played football and basketball through high school and as a collegiate athlete. Team sports defined the husband, father, manager and businessman he ultimately became: Vince needed other people to rely on him and equally so, he needed to rely on other people. He never did seem to appreciate one-on-one or solo sports such as wrestling or surfing; however, one exception was golf, in which case he always had a well packed cooler in tow, filled with pitchers of homemade margaritas, white Russians or the coldest of beers.

Vince admired the greats, such as W. C. Fields, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Sam Kinison, George Carlin and Mike Tyson. He was very much a "morning person" but unfortunately, he had two sons that were not. He expressed physical affection towards the ones he cared about. As his guest, he generously served the finest of food and drink. Everywhere he went, he was the life of the party. He was a master at winning friends and influencing people.

Vince was a storyteller and an entertainer. He was a mentor, and he was unabashedly a mentee. He was a traveler and a gambler. He was headstrong to a fault. He was a meticulous planner and a deep thinker. He was a light sleeper that "woke up before the enemy" and he "didn't take any prisoners." He appreciated a quality ball point pen and wrote emails in CAPSLOCK. He drove really big cars and his clocks were set 10 minutes fast. Vince was always three steps ahead of you, guaranteed.

"May your glass be ever full,

May the roof over your head be always strong,

And may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead."

He was preceded in death by his mother Florence, his stepfather Francis, his dog Molly (Shiba Inu mix) and his cat Chubs (British Shorthair). He is survived by his sons Patrick (children Avery and Adelyn) and Michael (wife Kelly and children Declan and Quinn) and his ex-wife Diane.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday February 11, 2023, at 12 noon at Tom Renick Park, 1565 Ocean Shore Blvd., Ormond-by-the-Sea, FL 32176. Please RSVP by February 3 to allow time to prepare. Everyone is welcome.

65 years is a long time friend!

August 1957 I walked into Dunedin Highland Junior High School and met my brother from another mother. We were both new and just hit it off like we had known each other since birth. I'm sad that we drifted apart these last several tears but there has always remained a special place for Vinny in my heart.

Rest in peace my brother,

.
