Age 63, of Erin, NY, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center with her loving family at her side. Joan was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and battled it courageously. Joan was born on September 14, 1949 in Elmira, NY. Joan was preceded by her parents, John and Gertrude Monroe. She is survived by her daughter, Brandi (Joseph Abbott) Root of Horseheads, NY; sons, Anthony (Jessica) Washenko of Syracuse, NY and Thomas Preston of Erin, NY; her sister, Carol (David) Wood of Horseheads, NY; her nieces, Kristy (Michael) Ryan and Kim (David) Nagle; her loving friend, Todd Sherwood; and several cousins. Joan was an endearing grandmother to her 4 grandchildren, Brittany Root, Alexis Washenko, Ty Washenko and Alexa Edersheim. Joan loved to sit at her kitchen table enjoying a cup of coffee with her sidekick (Morgie-cat) at her side and watch her television shows. "Spunky" Joanie was a bartender for many years at Erin Town Tavern and was not afraid to take her stick out and take care of business. Joan is loved by so many.
