October 1987: The Dow Jones average plunges 508 points, the biggest one-day decline in history. NYSE volume exceeds 604 million shares. Stock portfolios lost an estimated $500 billion.

December 1987:  President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign the historic INF Treaty in Washington, D.C., which calls for the systematic destruction of existing intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

February 1988:  Evangelist Jimmy Swaggert makes a tearful television confession to an illicit affair with a Louisiana prostitute.

March 1988:  Lt. Col. Oliver North is indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that he conspired to defraud the government in connection with the Iran-Contra affair. Two days later, North resigns from the U.S. Marine Corps.
