With the last name of Strickland, it's no surprise that Rich Sturgis and I were together in home room or sitting near one another in class. He dated my friend Becky Smith (class of '71) for a while. When I think of Rich, I think of his big, warm smile (and his good looks!)
I remember one time when the fire alarm went off, I was just leaving the restroom and I smelled and saw smoke in the hall. Someone had set off some fireworks or something. I returned to the restroom and told Richard that there was real smoke in the hall and that the school was really on fire this time.
I remember that Richard told me to calm down, as I was a bit excited at the time. I remember walking outside with Richard. I find it eerie that he would die in a fire less than a year later.
