Karl Mercer INDIAN TRAIL Karl Alan Mercer, 66, of Statesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Detroit, Mich., on July 7, 1945, son of the late A. Dale Mercer and surviving mother, Lois Kern Mercer, of Kansas City, Mo. He married Sandra Dunham Mercer on March 6, 1971, in Flushing, Mich. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Dale Mercer (Cheryl) of Troutman and John Thomas Mercer (Serena) of Swartz Creek, Mich.; a daughter, Denise Mercer Blackwell (Bobby) of Moravian Falls; grandchildren, Bethany, Marl-ee, Kaylee, Kyle, Santiago, Dakota, Karlee, Ella, and Wesley; brothers, Kaye (Barb) Mercer of Poland, Ohio, George Mercer of Kansas City, Mo., and Thomas (Cheryl) of Sugarland, Texas; sisters-in-law, Connie (Tom) Mutton of Surprise, Ariz., Kathleen (Jack) Rothfuss, and Diane (Kurt) Hartman, all of Bay City, Mich.; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, especially those of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he was a grateful member of 25 years, and Al-Anon. He also leaves his beloved dog, Serenity. Karl was a pipefitter/master plumber for 40 years at Buick Division of General Motors Corporation in Flint, Mich., and the original owner of Flushing Sewer Service for ten years before retiring to Statesville in 2003, where he was an avid classic car enthusiast. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 315 W. Broad St., Statesville, where he was a Stephen Minister. Visitation will be in Memorial Hall of the church Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Broad Street United Methodist Church New Church Building Fund, P.O.
