John A. 'Trapper John' Svihel - 67

Side Lake, Minnesota and formerly of Foley, Minnesota

March 23, 1944 - June 28, 2011

John A. 'Trapper John' Svihel, age 67, of Side Lake and formerly of Foley, died Tuesday June 28, 2011 after a lengthy battle from mesothelioma surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011 at St. John's Catholic Church, Foley, MN. The Rev. Dan Walz will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Foley Funeral Home in Foley, MN and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Parish prayers will be 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Foley Funeral Home, Foley, MN.

John was born March 23, 1944 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to John W. and Sophie (Gondeck) Svihel. He married Patricia Hromatka in 1963 in Foley and they later divorced. He grew up in Foley and graduated from Foley High School in 1962. John farmed and operated a roofing business in Foley for many years before moving to Side Lake where he made 'one of a kind' furniture. John was an accomplished athlete, enjoyed the outdoors, trapping, hunting and fishing. He won the World Professional Muskie Association championship in 1988. He was fondly known as 'Trapper John' to all who knew him.

He is survived by his sons, John J. (Julie) Foley, MN; Mark (Thea), Oak Grove, MN; grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan and MacKenzie, mother, Sophie, Foley, MN; brothers and sisters, Carol (John) Michalke, Stone Lake, WI; Doug (Cathy), Crosslake, MN; Mary (Tom) Kaproth, Foley, MN; Philip (Michelle), Foley, MN and Peter (Karen), Foley, MN.
