My father received a full four year scholarship to Ithaca College graduating in 1932 majoring in musical theory, woodwinds and U.S. history. I spent the first 18 years of my life as an Army brat. My father retired from the Army and specifically the 6th Army Band at the Presidio of San Francisco. He then began work for the Treasury Department in San Francisco. Again he retired and moved with his wife, Cosette, to Fairfield, California near Travis Air Force Base. He lived to the age of 88 and died of colon cancer on Armed Forces Day, May of 1998. He loved his daily walk and listening to Mozart.
I remember him well standing in front of the Band with all the piccolo players playing the counterpoint to The Stars and Stripes Forever.
