CLHS CLASS OF ’62 HOLDS REUNION

The Concordia Lutheran High School class of 1962 held a reunion on Saturday, September 24, at noon at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in downtown Fort Wayne.  The event was attended by 34 members of the class.  The total attendance including spouses and guests was 57.

Following a dinner, members of the class shared information about themselves and their families.  Memories of the high school when it was located on Maumee Avenue were also shared.  Class member, Steve Kammeyer, served as moderator for the event and a devotion was given by Jan and Dan Clymer.

Photos of the class members and guests in attendance are in PHOTO GALLERIES 60th Reunion folder.

We thank God for the many ways in which the ministry of CLHS shaped lives for eternity.

------------------------------------------------------------

During the mid 1940s, Concordia College had increased enrollment, and Lutheran High School experienced a rapid growth of enrollment so that the facilities of Concordia College were taxed.  Synod's Board for Higher Education resolved in 1947 that the high school should have its own facilities, so in 1949 Synod's Board of Directors executed a 50-year lease for almost 2 acres of land at the SE corner of the college campus at 1715 Maumee Ave. for the erection of a new building.

The new 3-story 27,000 ft. school at a cost of $600,000 was dedicated on September 7, 1952, with the Reverend Herman H. Zehnder (Zion's assistant pastor from 1942 – 1946) of Bay City, Michigan the speaker.  After using the college facilities and being in existence for 17 years, Lutheran High School with an enrollment of 423 pupils in 1952 had its own building designed to accommodate 500 students, and eventually its name in large aluminum letters over the front entrance on Maumee Ave.  It was also at that time that the high school students began to publish every 3 weeks their own newspaper called Lu-Hi Voice, and a yearbook called Luminarian.  Prior to that, the high school participated in the college publications.

On March 16, 1955, the name Concordia Lutheran High School (CLHS) was officially adopted for the 20-year-old institution; however, the lettering over the front entrance was not altered.  Student enrollment continued to increase in the 50s so that it was necessary to add on a west wing after 5 years in 1957 at a cost of $90,000 that increased the size of the building 20% by 7,000 ft. That fall, 554 pupils attended the school.
