Alice Asher (Mackey)

Alice Asher (Mackey)

Alice Asher Mackey, 77, of Evanston died April 25, 2017, at Evanston Hospital. Alice Jayne Asher was born on November 5, 1939, to Marjorie Asher Holland (Edward) and Frank Asher. Born and raised in Frankfort, Indiana, she graduated as valedictorian and the only African American in her class. She moved to Chicago to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN-RN), and later, a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree. She worked at Skokie Valley Community Hospital (now NorthShore University HealthSystem) as Director of Medical Surgical Units and Director of Alcohol and Drug Treatment. She retired in 1983 due to health issues. Because of her professional accomplishments, the Black Nurses Association established a scholarship in her honor. When Alice, an only child, moved to Evanston, she married Glenn Mackey Sr. They later divorced. From that union, she had three children. Alice leaves to cherish her memory, Glenn Jr. (Glenda), Risa (William Dawson Jr.), and Jeff (Michelle); her grandchildren, Kendall, Janae, Jessica, Lauren, Amanda, and Evan; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, loving relatives, and friends.

I have thought often about Alice and how lucky we are to have had her in our class.  We all walked to school together every day.  If I remember correctly, Alice was voted "Best looking" of our senior class.  I have told stories about our times together and what those times taught me.   The most important lesson was to never judge anyone by anything but "who" they are and NOT what.  Alice was a "treasure".  We are lucky to have been friends.

Alice was classy even as when we were young, and she handled herself with grace.  I was sorry to hear of her death.

We were blessed to have Alice as a classmate. She had a sweet soul, and I always enjoyed chatting with her in school and at our reunions. We'll miss having Alice with us in September.

It saddens all of us to loose a friend.  Alice was not a close friend of mine, but as a classmate I believe all of  the class of '57 gained an early education just having her around. In another time and place her life could have been unbearable during her school years, but she was treated well at FHS and that speaks well of all her classmates.  Her presance in my formative school years hopefully made me a better person.

RIP Alice

There were so many times when we had our "slumber" parties and she was

scheduled to go to Zionsville with her family, she stayed behind to be with us

Loved her laugh ;she was a perfect match with us. Great memories !!

I think of Alice with her sweetness, warm smile, and kindness.  What a model she was for living graciously in a time and place that must have bee difficult for her at times. Alice Maher

I'm pretty sure that Mary and i lived in Evanston at the same time that Alice lived there. I've lamented that we never connected.

I have often told of Alice's friends' efforts to get her an escort to a dance, an almost unbelieveable story, given the times. While there was bigotry in the Gem City, it was pretty invisible among our peers.
