Lance hitched a ride with me cross country, he to New Mexico and I to California while we were in the service in '60 or '61. We broke down in Missouri as I recall.  Bolt came loose on the transmission and we lost fluid. Lucky to find a filling statiion that fixed it.  I took Lance to his preferred location in downtown Albuquerque and bid him farewell, shaking his hand and expressing my gratitude that we had the chance to get to know one another.  Years later at one of the "57 reunions I saw Lance for the first time since our trip and asked him if "that really happened, that we broke down on the trip." In typical Lance fashion, whrein he faked a moment of seriousness before breaking out in a huge smile, he said, "Yes, it happened, right before we got to New Mexico and you dumped me in the middle of nowhere."  Oddly, I was thinking of Lance and our trip, his smile, his humor, our friendship just days before I read of his passing. R.I.P Lance, Easy Rider, Travelin' Man.
