Occupation: University Professor (Emeritus)
Family:

Wife: Judith Jayson Sonfield (we met as undergraduates at Cornell). Judy is a retired school social worker. Her second career: self-employed as a garden designer, now largely retired with only a few remaining ongoing clients.

Our Children:

Brian Sonfield, Assistant General Counsel for General Law, Ethics and Regulation at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington D.C.

Brian is married to Janet Javar, Senior Evaluation Specialist at the U.S. Department of Labor in D.C. Brian and Janet have two children, Alana and Noah.

Adam Sonfield, Associate Director of Policy Analysis at the Guttmacher Institute in D.C., and the Executive Editor of the Institute's journal "Guttmacher Policy Review." The Guttmacher Institute is a "think tank" with a primary focus on reproductive health policy.

We are very proud of the work that Adam, Brian and Janet do, and their contributions to our society. And, of course, we love, and get great pleasure from, our two grandchildren.

Education:

K-12 Great Neck Public Schools
A.B. Cornell University, 1964
M.B.A. Harvard University, 1966
Ph.D. New York University, 1976

Career:

I am the Robert F. Dall Distinguished Professor in Business at the Zarb School of Business, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY.

I have been at Hofstra since the mid-1970s. Prior to that I was an owner/manager in a large privately-held multinational musical instrument business.

I teach primarily in the area of Strategic Management, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and have published about 350 articles in academic journals and proceedings, in the fields of entrepreneurship, small business, family business and minority business. The Small Business Institute, the oldest academic organization focusing on entrepreneurship and small business, honored me by establishing the annual monetary "Matthew Sonfield Research Award" in 2017.

I continue to enjoy both teaching and academic research/publishing. My plans for retirement involve teaching for several more fall semesters combined with sabbatical leaves from teaching in the spring semesters of each academic year.

*Since writing the above, I retired (and was awarded Emeritus status) on March 1, 2019.*

My post-retirement life includes volunteering as a "costumed historical interpreter" at Long Island's 200-acre Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a living history museum containing over 50 houses, stores, barns, and other buildings, dating from 1660 to 1875. I am also continuing my intellectual growth by taking on-line graduate-level courses in musicology and a wide variety of other topics on MOOC - "Massive Open Online Courses" offered by top-ranked universities. (I strongly recommend MOOC.)
