Kelly was a pal. She was an athlete and a creative thinker; not often distinctions that go together. Her determination to be the best on the track field never seemed to overshadow her support for teammates and I think that is one of the reasons she and I were friends. She was kind and encouraging even when I ran with bricks in my sneakers. I waited tables with Kelly in college and she was hilarious to work with and again supportive when I was fired for my inability to use a waiter's key. Her solution was to practice with several bottles of wine until we literally got sick from trying. Fun girl. Weird haircuts. Good friend. Big loss.
