After college & grad school at UNC-G, worked in D.C. for a few years; moved to Atlanta for a few years; came back to NC in 1991 to work in pharmaceutical development with Burroughs Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline) in RTP. Oldest daughter graduates from high school in June (off to NC State in fall). Does this mean we are getting old? |

Random high school memory: In driver's ed, we had that really nice practice range, laid out sort of like a miniature town. There would be a half dozen or so kids driving slowly around in circles in Cutlass Supremes. Two people would be in each car, and after awhile we'd swap places.
Most of the cars had "panic" break pedals on the passenger side as well as the driver's side. One day while it was my turn to drive, my car partner thought it would be really funny to ease his foot onto the passenger-side break when I wasn't looking. I didn't know the difference, I just kept the car's speed up to stay in line. He eased the break down pretty far this way. When we came around the circle and were directly in front of Coach Morrow, the kid let off the break, the tires squealed and the car rocketed forward. Coach Morrow jerked his bullhorn up and hollered, "Austin! Pull over!" "It wasn't my fault" meant nothing to Coach Morrow; he had heard it all before. My car partner was laughing so hard I thought he'd pass out. Driver's ed teachers deserve a special reward in heaven. |
