In Memory

Nancy Smythe (Bollinger)

Sweet Nancy died suddenly in December with her family and Virginia Hill Johnson by her side. She had been to Greenville mini-reunion in September and we had a great time. She saw a few others in Jackson and she and Virginia went home to Georgia. Nancy was actively raising funds for her mission trip and was so excited.

From Virginia Hill Johnson 2008
Today (3/7) would have been Nancy's 62nd birthday. Since
we were children we had great delight in celebrating each other's birthdays (mine is exactly 5 weeks later in April). I love country music and there is a song entitled "You Find Out Who Your Friends Are", and I always think of Nancy when I hear it. She was the one who never seemed to count the cost when it came to her friends. She would truly "jump in her car, get there fast, never count the cost" when I needed her. Consequently, I was careful to send out the "All Call" in her direction, because I knew IF SHE COULD she would be there. In 2006 and 2007 I had major surgeries and she was the one who was there to sit with me and walk with me on those days after surgery. Little did I realize that those would be some of our last visits together.
In October, 2007, we went to Mississippi for a long weekend and traipsed all across the Delta and even returned to our summer camp in Durant, MS. Shortly after our return, my husband and I headed to Sarasota, FL, for our annual visit with friends there, but I was looking forward to having Nancy "do" a Pampered Chef cookie party for my grandchildren and our neighborhood kids the Thursday after Thanksgiving. But, that was not to be. She collapsed the day before from a heart attack, never regaining consciousness. I think of her daily and know that the fullness of my life is somewhat diminished,
though God always promises us that He will always be there for us. She taught me much about being a friend, and I really miss her. Happy Birthday, NCS!

Nancy finished well! May we all do as well.
I was supposed to have dinner in Jackson with Virginia and Nancy in October and somehow didn't follow through with "instructions". THEN several weeks later I was in Atlanta and had made arrangements with Nancy to call her. She was going to come to my hotel so we could have coffee. I got busy and didn't make the call.

Reminder to us all-------------don't do as I did!

May I remember and do differently next time.

Once I was in Jackson for a business meeting that lasted 5 days. Nancy knew I hated to be away from my famly. She would invite me over of supper and talk about my family. Thanks Nancy, you were a good friend. Charles Sikes.

I, also, was invited by Nancy to stop in and visit on my way to Spartanburg, SC more than once. I regret that I never did. I felt that I didn't have the time!
