David was one of those guys that was just an all around good guy. After I moved away from Greenville, I happened to be back in town visiting family and decided to go down to Cherry's Christian Bookstore to find a special Bible for a gift. I was absolutely shocked when he walked up to me and asked if I was Diane Dryden. I didn't even recognize him and yet he remembered me? We visited for awhile, traded some memories and said goodbye. For years now, I have remembered that chance encounter and thought I would go back into that bookstore one day and say hello, not knowing he is now gone. I know he will be missed by many and I have a great memory of him.

David was one of my best friends from junior high through high school. We hung out together all the time. We bowled in the same leagues, we collected and traded baseball cards and played baseball together in summer leagues as well as being teammates on the GHS baseball team. When I got married in 1988 in Louisville, KY, I sent out invitations to alot of people, mostly local, but a few back in Texas. Right before the ceremony I took a peek out in the audience, and David was in the crowd. I couldn't believe it. He and his wife drove 800 miles to my wedding. That's a true friend. Living so far from where I grew up, I often think about school and the friends I had and I think about David alot. Even though I'm 800 miles away from Greenville, I still miss him.

David was a great person and Dad. I knew him since jr. high, but knew him better after high school. I remember when he worked at Cherry's Christian Bookstore, but mainly I knew him through our kids. His son and my oldest son have been close friends since they were in 5th grade, went to TX A&M together and remain close friends today. We were so saddened by the news when he got sick. David's memorial service was so uplifting and an awesome testimony to him and God.
David is truly missed but lives on through his amazing son and daughter.

David,

I think about you every time the NBA season opens. We used to hang out at your house and watch as many ball games as possible. Some people you just never forget!

I think of my cousin David very often. Most of you don't know that, until he was about 11 years old, he was known by his middle name, Kelly. I believe he asked to change to David around the time Kelly Caldwell was in our 4th grade class at Crockett. and then, later, Kelli Byrom came along in Junior High. It was hard for me to ever call him David. He was like my brother, as we grew up close. He was my playmate for battles with toy soldiers and cowboys and Indians, in our Reavilon neighborhood. When both of our families moved to Park St., we continued to be close friends, even as we carpooled together in my Aunt's compact car to Jr.High, with his tuba crowding the back seat.

His short battle with a very aggressive multiple myaloma that took him in his mid-thirties rocked our whole family.

I know he would be so very proud of his, now adult, children, Daniel and Katie, for all their accomplishments. He would  be a fantastic Grandaddy to his first grandchild, Logan Shepherd, born in 2014.

I miss my cousin/brother, Kelly.
