Welcome GHS 1958 Alumni!!

Are you a graduate of Greenwich High School (Connecicut) from 1958?  Aha!  You've found the right place to be.  Welcome aboard.

This website has been created to serve as a meeting place for those who graduated GHS in 1958.  There are no fees associated with the website and personal information about members is kept confidential.  Take a few minutes to check us out.

The key to this website is the database of all GHS 1958 graduates.  All names have been (or are in the process of being) entered in the database and the website.  If you were in the 1958 graduating class your name is in the data base.  You can check it out by clicking on the JOIN HERE link in the upper right of this page.  You will then find a listing of all 1958 graduates.  Find your name and click on it.  Your name will then appear and you will be instructed to click here now.   You will then have a chance to add information about yourself - or to update information that has already been entered (from the 50th Anniversary program).

That's all there is to it!  You then have full access to the website - you can send private messages to others in the 1958 class, access password protected pages, you can help update the website by sending an automated invitation to friends you continue to be in touch with, automatically link to your Facebook page, you can post announcements, start dialogues/discussions, and so much more.  Enjoy!

If you have a problem/question about the website, please send an email to Joe Levine (levine@msu.edu).  I'll try to help.

Looking forward to seeing many old friends here on our website.

All the best -

Joe

ANNOUNCEMENTS

56 Classmates On Board!

Hi Everyone -

As of November 23, 2021 we have 56 classmates registered for our website.

Hopefully it will continue to grow.

1) Even though computers aren't everyone's "cup of tea", I am sure you are finding that the design of this website is quite easy to use.  And, most importantly - there's really nothing that you will do that will cause our website to self-destruct.  So...take time to do some exploring.  Try posting a photo of yourself, sending a message to a friend, updating your profile.  And, if you get stuck - send me an email and I'll try and help (levine@msu.edu).

2) Some of you are very cautious about signing up for a website like this, fearing that your own computer or email system may be compromised.  I've been administering websites operated by ClassCreator (the group that is responsible for the framework of our website) for over 10 years and I have been very impressed with the protections they have built into their system.  The only people that have full access to our information are our own alumni who have registered.  Email addresses are always protected.  You won't be getting junk mail or scams because of our website.

3) What's the catch?  The only catch to our use of the website are the ads that appear.  It's the way ClassCreator is able to generate revenue.  You are not required to click on any ads.

4) See a name you remember?  Send them a message and say HELLO..  They will receive a notification that your message is waiting for them on the website (and all they have to do is click on a link that is provided).  On the left side bar click on "Message Center".  Then  click on "Compose Message".

5) Your help in recruiting more former classmates to our website is key to our success.  Click on  "Missing Classmates" (at the top of the page) to see whose name is there (and there are a lot of names!).  See someone you are still in touch with?  Click on their name and then follow the prompts to send them an email.

6) And finally, some statistics - a total of 6750 website visits (as of November 23, 2021) have been recorded since we started in February 2018.  Yes, there are 56 who have registered for the website - but 222 who have yet to register.

I hope to see you online!

Joe (Levine)  levine@msu.edu  -  GHS58 Website Administrator

Greenwich is famous!

One hundred years ago (December 11, 1921) a small amateur radio station was set up near the intersection of North Street and Clapboard Ridge Rd in Greenwich.

The purpose of the station, 1BCG, was to attempt to send radio signals across the Atlantic Ocean to Ardrossan, Scotland.  And it was a success!

For the first time it was possible to communicate via radio from North America, acorss the Atlantic, to Europe.  And the North American signal came from Greenwich!

To find out more about this event, you can check out the 1950 Proceedings prepared by the  Radio Club of America:

https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Radio-Club-of-America/Radio-Club-of-America-1950-10.pdf

So, you ask, what kind of nerd would really care about such an event?  The members of W1KFB - the GHS Radio Club of 1958 - of course.  Members of the 1958 graduating class who were members of the radio club included:  Fred "Tom" Clarke K1AST (now W4OKW), Alan Gilchrist KN1BGZ (now K1BGZ), Dennis Smith W1HUQ, and Joe Levine KN1GMR (now W8JRK).  Club advisor was Mr. Ed Holden - W1YTU.

Checking out I95!

Would love to share this with the class, in 1956, I got my license. 95 was being built, it was opened as far as Norwalk, GHS. was playing football the next day with NHS, well needless to say my partners in crime, Mike Loparco, Not sure about John Carino, and Charlie Penella who has passed Charlotte Strazza and I believe Patty Strazza, got into my dads 56 grey and white Pontiac and I drove with lights off on 95 that wasn't opened yet to go to Cooks on the Darien/Norwalk line. we went into see if any Norwalk football players were around. They wern't so we left. Mike if you are reading this or if you or anyone else can remember our little stunt without getting caught let me know hugs to all

Here's the rest of the cheer: AlFeBiNiCr AlFeBiNiCr SiC! SiC! SiC! Thanks, Tom; enjoyed the memory! I believe Mr. Alden Smith made up the HAgLiNaK cheer. It was to help us remember the valences of the elements. All those in the first line had a valence of one, in the second line a valence of two, and so on. Very effective!

Here's the whole cheer:

HAgLiNaK HAgLiNaK

CuBa CaFe PbZnMg

AlFeBiNiCr AlFeBiNiCr

SiC! SiC! SiC!

Hi fellow GHS'58'ers.

Just want to give Joe a shout-out for putting this together and giving us the opportunity to share some cherished memories. Here's hoping all of you are well and managing through these crazy times. How lucky were we to have grown up in the 50's and in Greenwich. (I don't like the notion of "priviileged," but our experience was a blessing.

Stay well, and thanks again to Joe.

Mike Loparco

Whitelisting

In order to ensure you receive important messages from our class web site, as well as messages sent directly to you from other classmates, it's important you whitelist the email address noreply@classcreator.net (that's a .net, not a .com).

What is whitelisting? Whitelisting simply means you are telling your email program to accept all emails coming from our class web site and our classmates. The technique for whitelisting varies by email program, but generally you will see the term "Whitelist", "Safe List", or "Safe Sender's List". This is where you want to be sure you have added the email address noreply@classcreator.net.

Class Creator, the system that helps us operate our class web site, uses the address noreply@classcreator.net when sending out email messages. Be assured that all emails sent through our site are valid — you will not receive spam email. Whitelisting noreply@classcreator.net is the single most important thing you can do to ensure you don't miss anything happening on our site or miss receiving your emails from fellow classmates.

Stop and take a moment to whitelist noreply@classcreator.net right now, and ensure you stay connected!
