DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO KAREN DINGES STAAB

Gilbert “Bucks” Dinges, 87, Schoenchen, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Via-Christi in Hays. He was born December 2, 1926, in Schoenchen, Kansas to Peter and Katie (Engle) Dinges. He married Alfrieda Herrman in Liebenthal, Kansas, in l950.  They were married for 64 years. 

Gilbert was a farmer all his life.  He was a member of the regular Army 1948 to 1949.   In l971 he opened a family business called Rock Haven located north of Schoenchen on his farm with his wife and three children. Later Rock Haven was sold but it retained its original name to this day.  Gilbert was elected Mayor in Schoenchen from 1973-l974.  He was retired from USD 489 in l991 after 25 years of service to the school district. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus 4166 Schoenchen, and a 4th degree Knights of Columbus 00282 member. Gilbert was a faithful member of St. Anthony Church, Schoenchen.  He was a lector in the church for 42 years and also was a Eucharistic Minister.  Gilbert served on numerous church committees for 6 different priests.   

In the last years of his life, he and Alfrieda found great joy in having the twin great grandchildren involved in their lives.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his family. Gilbert’s family was his life. 

Survivors include his wife; son Jason Dinges and wife Beryl; two daughters Karen Dinges Staab and husband Pat, and Beverly Dinges Gross all of Hays; one brother, Jim Dinges and wife Erma of Schoenchen, one sister Mary Binder and husband Robert of Hays; two sister-in-laws, Lavone Dinges of Hays and Mary Dinges of Bend, Oregon; six grandchildren, Joshua Dinges and wife Sarah, Matthew Dinges, Zachary Dinges and wife Michelle, Kourtney Gross, Megan Staab, and Sammy Staab; Four great grandchildren, Twins Javon Searight and Leia Searight, Carter Dinges, and Naomi Dinges. 

One son preceded him in death, Kenneth Joe Dinges and his brothers, Alvin Dinges, Julius Dinges, Victor Dinges, Henry Dinges and Melvin Dinges and one sister Hilda Dinges Staab. 
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, July 1, 2014 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW.. 

Visitation will be Thursday 4 PM – 8 PM and Friday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. 

A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be Thursday at 5:30 PM. A combined 3rd and 4th degree rosary will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7:00 PM all at the funeral home. The 4th degree Knights of Columbus will provide an honor guard from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM .

DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO CAROL HOOVER

Herbert C. Hoover 

Herbert C. Hoover, 85, Hays, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Sterling House of Hays. 

He was born March 4, 1929 in Grinnell, Iowa the son of Frederick D. and Grace (Cline) Hoover.  On January 21, 1950 he married Wilma J. Rupp in Hays.  He was the General Manager of Rupp’s Incorporated John Deere dealership until his retirement in 1985.  He was a member of the Sunflower Retriever Club, the National American Hunt and Retrieve Association, loved to go hunting with his black labs Gunner and Crash, was a member of the National Hot Rod Assoc. and loved drag racing with his top alcohol dragster, and was an avid airplane lover. 

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, sons Don Hoover and wife Jolene and Fred Hoover and Sharley Benham, all of Hays, five daughters, Mary Metz and husband Bill of Berryton, KS, Carol Neihardt and husband Nelson of Eudora, KS, Connie Sheldon of Hays, Sue Ihde and husband Bob of Hays, and Janet Kuhn and husband Ed of Walker, KS, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ward and Harlan Hoover, sisters Velda Hoover and Esther Diehm, a son-in-law Mike Schlageck, and a great grandson Xavier Shuler. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 10:00 am until 10:45 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.  A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Herbert C. To Gloria Pfannenstiel in the loss of her father

 Arthur “Art” Pfannenstiel


Arthur “Art” Pfannenstiel, 84, Hays, died Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born January 26, 1930 in Munjor, Kansas the son of John and Rosa (Degenhardt) Pfannenstiel.  On August 4, 1952 he married Josita Rohleder in Emmeram, Kansas.  He was in the Kansas National Guard for three years, worked at Travenol for six years and was a self employed carpet and tile installer.  He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus Council #11492 of Munjor.  He played in polka bands for many years, loved his farm, and loved animals.  


Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, three sons Tom Pfannenstiel and wife Danielle of St. Paul, MN, Doug Pfannenstiel and wife Cathy and Dan Pfannenstiel and wife Michele, all of Hays, one daughter Gloria Pfannenstiel of Hays, a daughter in law Sue Pfannenstiel of Apple Valley, MN, brothers Marvin Pfannenstiel of Sequin, WA and Edward Pfannenstiel of Pueblo, CO, six grandchildren Dr. Ramona Baumfalk and husband Barry of Kansas City, KS, John Pfannenstiel and Melissa Pfannenstiel, both of Apple Valley, MN, Taylor Pfannenstiel of Wichita, and Kylee Pfannenstiel and Rachel Pfannenstiel,both of Hays, three great grandchildren, Sydney, Bryant, and Brenyn Baumfalk of Kansas City, KS.  

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Vern Pfannenstiel, and four sisters, Leona Befort, Irene Rome, Virginia Pfannenstiel, and Helen Younger.

David Mahlon Kingsley died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. He was 101.

Mahlon was born July 7, 1912 to D.C. and Mary (Johnson) Kingsley at their home south of Ellis, Kansas.   He  attended country school and then upper grades in Ellis. After his father passed in 1928, he laid out of high school a year to help manage the family farm.  He went on to graduate with the class of 1932.   He married Addie B. Skelton on July 20, 1949 in Hays, Kansas.

           A lifelong farmer and stockman he lived out his life attending to the land originally homesteaded by his grandfather Carlos Kingsley in 1878.   Having seen the effects of the dustbowl, he is credited with being a leader in soil and water conservation efforts including building one of the first set of terraces in Ellis, County, restoration of erodible ground back to grass, and the construction of water conservation ponds throughout his pastures.  He introduced Galloway and then Angus cattle into their farming operation in the 1930s and was known for his commercial cow herd.  Mahlon was active as a member of the Congregational Church and later the United Methodist  Church, both of Ellis.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star.   His other community commitments included The Soil Conservation Service, USD388 school board, Ellis County Rural Fire Board, Ellis High School FFA, Ellis County 4-H, Ellis County 4-H Fair and the Ellis Junior Free Fair.  Many men from Ellis and surrounding towns will remember him fondest for the opportunity to work and learn on his farm and the meals they shared at his wife Addie B.’s table.   

He was preceded in death by his wife Addie B. an infant brother and brothers Marlyn (Grace), Darwin (Cecil) and Orville.

He is survived by his three sons, Douglas and wife Debbie, Branson, MO,  Roger Ellis, KS  and Jody Patten, Ellis, KS,  Timothy and wife, Lilly of Hays, KS five grandchildren,  Joshua and wife Misty of Milwaukee, WI, Bradley and wife Rebekah of Prairie Village, KS, Rachel Loving and husband, Shane of Hays, KS Erica Hedge and husband Andrew of Overland Park, KS, Austin Fickel of Branson, MO and four great-grandchildren, Alexander and Isaac Loving of Hays, KS, William Kingsley of Prairie Village, KS, Vivian Kingsley of Milwaukee, WI and a cousin, Lily Georgene Johnson of Hays.

 Services will be Friday, October 5, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Ellis, Kansas at 10 am with interment following at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis.

 Viewing will be Thursday 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Keithley Funeral Chapel in Ellis, Kansas and Friday 9 AM until service time at the church.

  Memorials are suggested to the Ellis United Methodist Church in his name.

Mildred M. Dreiling

Mildred M. Dreiling, 90, Hays, died Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born January 10, 1923 in Schoenchen, Kansas the daughter of Gabreal and Anna Marie (Degenhardt) Zimmerman.  On October 30, 1944 she married Alfred Fross.  He died September 19, 1949.  She married William S. “Bill” Dreiling on February 17, 1954 in Hays.  He died February 16, 2013.  She was a homemaker, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society Christian Mothers, and  the Hays Medical Center Auxiliary.  She loved doing needlepoint, baking, gardening, playing cards and bingo.

Survivors include three sons, Julian Dreiling and wife Sheila of Lincoln, NE, Larry Dreiling and wife Tammy of Evans, GA, and David Dreiling and wife Amy of Colwich, KS, a daughter in law, LeAnn Fross of Hays, grandchildren Brandon Dreiling and wife Crystal, Brent Dreiling, Brady Dreiling and wife Martha, Bryce Dreiling and wife Tricia, Joshua Dreiling, Kenton Dreiling and wife Lindsey, Phillip Dreiling, Kevin Fross and wife Laura, Dustin Fross, Amiee Dreiling, Danielle Marsh and husband R.C., and Jerree Fross.  Ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Fross, brothers, Buddy, Jerry, and Bill Zimmerman and a sister, Cora Arnold.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 9:00 am until 9:45 all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph Catholic Church or to Hospice of Hays Medical Center.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Frank E. Schryer died Nov. 18th at 11:20pm in Las Vegas, NV with family present. He is the father of Frances Balloun (1967), Mark Schryer (1970) and C. Diane Jones(1973). He was 89 years old and a Fisheries Biologist for the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission. he was preceeded in death by his wife and their mother, N. Renee Stoddard Schryer formerly of Utah.

LEONILDA “NILDA” HALL 

Leonilda “Nilda” Hall, 90, formerly of Hays, died Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Ft. Dodge Soldiers Home in Ft. Dodge, Kansas. 

She was born September 6, 1923 in Padovi, Italy the daughter of Giuseppe and Amelia (Toros) Ribarich.  On September 22, 1948 she married Ralph J. Orth in Triestie, Italy and then moved to the United States.  Ralph died on December 14, 1960.  She later married Robert I. Hall on July 1, 1968 in Salina, Kansas.  She was a homemaker and worked at Mellers Photo for ten years.  She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was involved with bowling leagues, bridge clubs, and was an avid reader and lover of music. 

Survivors include her husband Robert “Bob” Hall, Ft. Dodge, KS, two daughters, Darlene Gansel and husband Richard, Hill City, KS, and Patricia Herbig and husband David of Blue Springs, MO, four grandchildren, Phillip Gansel and Patrick Gansel of Hill City, Shana Herbig of Austin, TX and Laura Herbig of Spokane, WA. 

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Richelle Herbig.
