Karen Phelps (Richards) - Class Of 1966

OBITUARY INFORMATION PROVIDED BY CAROL EASTON RUBINO, CLASS OF 1967:

Kasey Maressa Richards, 50, of Valparaiso passed away Saturday, June 19, 1999 at her residence. She was born August 25, 1948 in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Jacqueline (Kwazny) Phelps. A Valparaiso resident for 21 years, formerly of Hobart, she was married on September 27, 1975 in Portage to Richard Spolyar.

A 1966 graduate of Hobart High School, she attended Purdue University North Central for two years and continued her education at Purdue University North Central when she was stricken ill. Kasey was a very talented freelance writer, public speaker and poet. Her accomplishments and achievements included being a board member of the South Haven Boys and Girls Club, the Coordinator for the Portage Meals on Wheels Program, she read book onto tapes for the blind at the Lake County Reference Library, a certified "Para-professional Peer Counselor" from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, she was active and instrumental in the annual "VOICES" conferences from 1990-1995 and traveled the country for 2 years giving "Stop Smoking Seminars."

She is survived by her lovng family: her husband, Richard of Valparaiso; one son, Don Patrick (Ellen) Forrest of Wheaton, Illinois; one daughter, Jahki Koerner of Phoenix, Arizona; two grandchildren, Scott Dobert of Phoenix and Ryan Forrest of Wheaton; her mother, Jaqueline Fields of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, James (Sandy) Phels of Quad City, Illinois, Ted Phelps of Michigan City and Larry Phelps; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 22, 1999 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Engel Funeral Home, 2700 Willowcreek Road, Portage, Indiana 46368. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 27, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Hobart, 5th and Main, Hobart, Indiana, 46342 with Dr. Justin Osterman officiating. Barbara Baker (Burkland) (1967)

Karen was a good friend, we enjoyed walking to St. Bridgets together.
