Don Howell - Class Of 1953

It seems appropriate to enter the obituary and biography of coach Don Howell who was a graduate of the Hobart High School class of 1953, and legendary Hobart coach. Birth: Jan. 1, 1935 Death: Nov. 28, 1999

On Nov. 28, 1999, Howell died suddenly from a massive heart attack while working out at a local health club. He was 64. Howell, who resided at 915 East Eighth Street, in Hobart, was one of Indiana's legendary football coaches.

He was a graduate of Hobart Senior High School, where he entered Hobart High School as a sophomore. He graduated in 1953 and was honored by the American Legion as the "Outstanding Hobart High School Senior Boy," and earned the "Most Athletic Senior" Award. He was the captain of the football team and earned All-Conference and All-State honors and participated in the North-South All-Star Game. He wore #64 as a football guard at Indiana University, graduating in 1957 with a B.S. degree, He earned a Master of Science degree the following year. He was the IU football captain in 1957 and was a Big Ten Lineman of the Week during the 1956 season. He was head football coach for the "Brickies" from 1966-1999 and posted a 314-73-2 record. He had but 2 losing seasons throughout coaching career. He had Indiana's Highest Overall Winning Percentage, 81.2%, and Indiana's Highest 1980's Winning Record, 119-14, during the eighties. His teams won a state record 11 Semi-State Championships, and 4 State Championships. His 1987 team was ranked 7th nationwide. He earned a National High School Athletic Association, "Distinguished Service Award," Midwest Region (8 States), in 1998 and is an inductee in the Indiana Football Hame of Fame.

Burial: Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
